44.          Foreword.

45.          I dedicate this book to you and to my family.

46.

47.          There is no such thing as a concept called the atonement that can save and exalt men, women, and children in the Kingdom of God independent of God The Father, God His Beloved Son Jehovah Jesus Christ the Holy Messiah, and God the Holy Spirit (the Holy Ghost), and their authorized prophets and apostles who hold the restored priesthood keys of salvation and exaltation.

48.          Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac foreshadowed the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

49.          As found in the sacrament prayers, God The Holy Spirit (the Holy Ghost) testifies —

50.          that God Our Eternal Father blesses and sanctifies and like Abraham sacrifices His Beloved Son, except no ram was found in the thicket, and no angel prevented the Father from sacrificing His Son,

51.           that out of love for us and The Father, Our Savior voluntarily offered His  body and His blood, His life, as the singular sacrifice for the sins and sorrows and suffering of all mankind,

52.          that He was resurrected on the third day and that He lives, such that all mankind will receive a resurrection;

53.          such that all who die without accountability are saved,

54.          that those who repent of sin and keep the commandments are and will be cleansed, sanctified and forgiven in Christ Jesus,

55.          will return to live with Heavenly Father and His Son,

56.          and over time become more and more like them,

57.          thus enabled to participate in the fulness of happiness and glory enjoyed by the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, and the righteous from Adam and Eve thru all ages.

58.          This writing is a compilation about the ATONEMENT, the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Hopefully it is of sufficient influence to encourage you to kneel at the feet of Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ.

59.          You are invited, indeed encouraged, to meet with missionaries and be taught and attend Church and have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and repent of your sins and be baptized and confirmed a member of The Church of Jesus Christ.

60.          To do so, call 1-801-240-1000 and see www.churchofjesuschrist.org.

62.          Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith

63.          Chapter 3. Jesus Christ, the Divine Redeemer of the World

64.          “Salvation could not come to the world without the mediation of Jesus Christ.”

65.          From the Life of Joseph Smith

66.          Years before Joseph Smith was born, his paternal grandfather felt inspired that something would happen in his family that “would revolutionize the world.”1

67.          Joseph Smith’s history records: “My grandfather, Asael Smith, long ago predicted that there would be a prophet raised up in his family, and my grandmother was fully satisfied that it was fulfilled in me.

68.          My grandfather Asael died in East Stockholm, St. Lawrence county, New York, after having received the Book of Mormon, and read it nearly through; and he declared that I was the very Prophet that he had long known would come in his family.”2

69.          As the Prophet of the Restoration, one of Joseph Smith’s most important roles was to testify of Jesus Christ.

70.          He was blessed to enjoy a personal knowledge of the divinity of Jesus Christ and to understand His role as the Redeemer of the world.

71.          This knowledge began with the First Vision, in which young Joseph saw Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and heard the Father declare, “This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!”

72.          (Joseph Smith—History 1:17).

73.          In this sacred experience, Joseph was privileged to receive instruction from the Savior of the world.

74.          Nearly twelve years later, on February 16, 1832, the Prophet was translating the Bible, with Sidney Rigdon as his scribe, in the home of John Johnson in Hiram, Ohio.

75.          After the Prophet translated John 5:29, which describes the resurrection of those who are good and those who are evil, a vision was opened to Joseph and Sidney, and they saw and conversed with the Savior:

76.          “By the power of the Spirit our eyes were opened and our understandings were enlightened, so as to see and understand the things of God— even those things which were from the beginning before the world was, which were ordained of the Father, through his Only Begotten Son, who was in the bosom of the Father, even from the beginning; of whom we bear record; and the record which we bear is the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ, who is the Son, whom we saw and with whom we conversed in the heavenly vision. …

77.          “And we beheld the glory of the Son, on the right hand of the Father, and received of his fulness; and saw the holy angels, and them who are sanctified before his throne, worshiping God, and the Lamb, who worship him forever and ever.

78.          “And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives!

79.          “For we saw him, even on the right hand of God;

80.          and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father—

81.          that by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created,

82.          and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God”

83.          (D&C 76:12–14, 20–24).

84.          Joseph Smith saw the Savior again on April 3, 1836.

85.          The Prophet and Oliver Cowdery had retired to the west pulpit in the Kirtland Temple.

86.          They bowed themselves in solemn prayer, after which the Savior appeared before them.

87.          The Prophet declared:

88.          “The veil was taken from our minds, and the eyes of our understanding were opened.

89.          We saw the Lord standing upon the breastwork of the pulpit, before us;

90.          and under his feet was a paved work of pure gold, in color like amber.

91.          His eyes were as a flame of fire;

92.          the hair of his head was white like the pure snow;

93.          his countenance shone above the brightness of the sun;

94.          and his voice was as the sound of the rushing of great waters,

95.          even the voice of Jehovah, saying:

96.          I am the first and the last;

97.          I am he who liveth,

98.          I am he who was slain;

99.          I am your advocate with the Father”

100.      (D&C 110:1–4).

101.      From such experiences, the Prophet gained firsthand knowledge and became a special witness of the divinity of the Savior.

102.      Teachings of Joseph Smith

103.      In all dispensations, God’s people have relied on the Atonement of Christ for the remission of their sins.

104.      “Salvation could not come to the world without the mediation of Jesus Christ.”3

105.      “God … prepared a sacrifice in the gift of His own Son, who should be sent in due time to prepare a way, or open a door through which man might enter into the Lord’s presence, whence he had been cast out for disobedience.

106.      From time to time these glad tidings were sounded in the ears of men in different ages of the world down to the time of Messiah’s coming.

107.      “By faith in this atonement or plan of redemption, Abel offered to God a sacrifice that was accepted, which was the firstlings of the flock.

108.      Cain offered of the fruit of the ground, and was not accepted, because he could not do it in faith; he could have no faith, or could not exercise faith contrary to the plan of heaven.

109.      It must be shedding the blood of the Only Begotten to atone for man, for this was the plan of redemption, and without the shedding of blood was no remission.

110.      And as the sacrifice was instituted for a type by which man was to discern the great Sacrifice which God had prepared, to offer a sacrifice contrary to that, no faith could be exercised, because redemption was not purchased in that way, nor the power of atonement instituted after that order; consequently Cain could have no faith; and whatsoever is not of faith, is sin.

111.      But Abel offered an acceptable sacrifice, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God Himself testifying of his gifts

112.      [see Hebrews 11:4].

113.      “Certainly, the shedding of the blood of a beast could be beneficial to no man,

114.      except it was done in imitation, or as a type, or explanation of what was to be offered through the gift of God Himself—and this performance done with an eye looking forward in faith on the power of that great Sacrifice for a remission of sins. …

115.      “… We cannot believe that the ancients in all ages were so ignorant of the system of heaven as many suppose, since all that were ever saved, were saved through the power of this great plan of redemption, as much before the coming of Christ as since; if not, God has had different plans in operation (if we may so express it), to bring men back to dwell with Himself.

116.      And this we cannot believe, since there has been no change in the constitution of man since he fell; and the ordinance or institution of offering blood in sacrifice was only designed to be performed till Christ was offered up and shed His blood—as said before—that man might look forward in faith to that time. …

117.      “That the offering of sacrifice was only to point the mind forward to Christ, we infer from these remarkable words of Jesus to the Jews:

118.      ‘Your Father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad’

119.      [John 8:56].

120.      So, then, because the ancients offered sacrifice it did not hinder their hearing the Gospel; but served, as we said before, to open their eyes, and enable them to look forward to the time of the coming of the Savior, and rejoice in His redemption. …

121.      We conclude that whenever the Lord revealed Himself to men in ancient days, and commanded them to offer sacrifice to Him, that it was done that they might look forward in faith to the time of His coming, and rely upon the power of that atonement for a remission of their sins.

122.      And this they have done, thousands who have gone before us, whose garments are spotless, and who are, like Job, waiting with an assurance like his, that they will see Him in the latter day upon the earth, even in their flesh

123.      [see Job 19:25–26].

124.      “We may conclude, that though there were different dispensations, yet all things which God communicated to His people were calculated to draw their minds to the great object, and to teach them to rely upon God alone as the author of their salvation, as contained in His law.”4

125.      Because Jesus Christ rose from the dead, all mankind will be resurrected.

126.      “The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it.

127.      But in connection with these, we believe in

128.      the gift of the Holy Ghost,

129.      the power of faith,

130.      the enjoyment of the spiritual gifts according to the will of God,

131.      the restoration of the house of Israel, and

132.      the final triumph of truth.”5

133.      “‘As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive;’ all shall be raised from the dead

134.      [1 Corinthians 15:22].

135.      The Lamb of God hath brought to pass the resurrection, so that all shall rise from the dead.”6

136.      “God has appointed a day in which He will judge the world, and this He has given an assurance of in that He raised up His Son Jesus Christ from the dead—the point on which the hope of all who believe the inspired record is founded for their future happiness and enjoyment; because, ‘If Christ be not risen,’ said Paul to the Corinthians, ‘your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

137.      Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ have perished’ [1 Corinthians 15:17–18]. …“Christ Himself has assuredly risen from the dead; and if He has risen from the dead, He will, by His power, bring all men to stand before Him: for if He has risen from the dead the bands of the temporal death are broken that the grave has no victory.

138.      If then, the grave has no victory, those who keep the sayings of Jesus and obey His teachings have not only a promise of a resurrection from the dead, but an assurance of being admitted into His glorious kingdom; for, He Himself says,

139.      ‘Where I am there also shall my servant be’

140.      [John 12:26].”7

141.      “Those who have died in Jesus Christ may expect to enter into all that fruition of joy when they come forth, which they possessed or anticipated here. …

142.      I am glad I have the privilege of communicating to you some things which, if grasped closely, will be a help to you when earthquakes bellow, the clouds gather, the lightnings flash, and the storms are ready to burst upon you like peals of thunder.

143.      Lay hold of these things and let not your knees or joints tremble, nor your hearts faint; and then what can earthquakes, wars and tornadoes do?

144.      Nothing.

145.      All your losses will be made up to you in the resurrection, provided you continue faithful.

146.      By the vision of the Almighty I have seen it. …

147.      “God has revealed His Son from the heavens and the doctrine of the resurrection also; and we have a knowledge that those we bury here God will bring up again, clothed upon and quickened by the Spirit of the great God; and what mattereth it whether we lay them down, or we lay down with them, when we can keep them no longer?

148.      Let these truths sink down in our hearts, that we may even here begin to enjoy that which shall be in full hereafter.”8

149.      Through the Atonement of Christ and obedience to the gospel, we can become joint heirs with Jesus Christ.

150.      “I believe in the Divinity of Jesus Christ, and that He died for the sins of all men, who in Adam had fallen.”9

151.      Articles of Faith 1:3

152.      “We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.”10

153.      “After God had created the heavens and the earth, he came down and on the sixth day said, ‘Let us make man in our own image.’

154.      In whose image?

155.      In the image of the Gods created they them, male and female, innocent, harmless, and spotless, bearing the same character and the same image as the Gods

156.      [see Genesis 1:26–27].

157.      And when man fell he did not lose his image, but his character still retained the image of his Maker.

158.      Christ, who is the image of man, is also the express image of his Father’s person

159.      [see Hebrews 1:3]. …

160.      Through the atonement of Christ and the resurrection, and obedience to the gospel, we shall again be conformed to the image of his Son, Jesus Christ

161.      [see Romans 8:29]; then we shall have attained to the image, glory, and character of God.”11

162.      “The Father of our spirits [provided]

163.      a sacrifice for His creatures,

164.      a plan of redemption,

165.      a power of atonement,

166.      a scheme of salvation,

167.      having as its great objects,

168.      the bringing of men back into the presence of the King of heaven,

169.      crowning them in the celestial glory,

170.      and making them heirs with the Son to that inheritance which is

171.      incorruptible, undefiled, and which fadeth not away.”12

172.      “The scripture says those who will obey the commandments shall be

173.      heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. …

174.      ‘The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God, and if children, then heirs of God, and joint heirs with Jesus Christ, if so be that we suffer with him in the flesh that we may be also glorified together.’

175.      [See Romans 8:16–17.]”13

176.      “How consoling to the mourners when they are called to part with a

177.      husband, wife, father, mother, child, or dear relative, to know that, although the earthly tabernacle is laid down and dissolved, they shall rise again to dwell in everlasting burnings in immortal glory, not to sorrow, suffer, or die any more, but they shall be heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ.”14

178.      Jesus Christ is

179.      perfect,

180.      pure,

181.      and holy,

182.      and He has called us to be like Him.

183.      “Who, among all the Saints in these last days, can consider himself as good as our Lord?

184.      Who is as perfect?

185.      Who is as pure?

186.      Who is as holy as He was?

187.      Are they to be found?

188.      He never transgressed

189.      or broke a commandment

190.      or law

191.      of heaven—

192.      no deceit was in His mouth,

193.      neither was guile found in His heart. …

194.      Where is one like Christ?

195.      He cannot be found on earth.”15

196.      “The creature was made subject to vanity,

197.      not willingly,

198.      but Christ subjected the same in hope

199.      [see Romans 8:20]—

200.      all are subjected to vanity while they travel through the crooked paths and difficulties which surround them.

201.      Where is the man that is free from vanity?

202.      None ever were perfect but Jesus; and why was He perfect?

203.      Because He was the Son of God,

204.      and had the fullness of the Spirit,

205.      and greater power than any man.”16

206.      “When still a boy [Jesus Christ] had all the intelligence necessary

207.      to enable Him to rule and govern the kingdom of the Jews,

208.      and could reason with the wisest and most profound doctors of law and divinity, and make their theories and practice to appear like folly compared with the wisdom He possessed.”17

209.      “The commandments of our Lord, we hope are constantly revolving in your hearts, teaching you, not only His will in proclaiming His Gospel, but His meekness and perfect walk before all, even in those times of severe persecutions and abuse which were heaped upon Him by a wicked and adulterous generation.

210.      Remember, brethren, that He has called you unto holiness; and need we say, to be like Him in purity?

211.      How wise,

212.      how holy;

213.      how chaste,

214.      and how perfect, then,

215.      you ought to conduct yourselves in His sight;

216.      and remember, too,

217.      that His eyes are continually upon you.”18

218.      “When we reflect upon the holiness and perfections of our great Master,

219.      who has opened a way whereby we may come unto him,

220.      even by the sacrifice of himself,

221.      our hearts melt within us for his condescension.

222.      And when we reflect also, that he has called us to be perfect in all things, that we may be prepared to meet him in peace

223.      when he comes in his glory

224.      with all the holy angels,

225.      we feel to exhort our brethren

226.      with boldness,

227.      to be humble

228.      and prayerful,

229.      to walk indeed as children of the light

230.      and of the day,

231.      that they may have grace to withstand every temptation,

232.      and to overcome every evil

233.      in the worthy name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

234.      For be assured, brethren, that the day is truly near when the Master of the house will rise up and shut the door, and none but such as have on a wedding garment will be permitted to enjoy a seat at the marriage supper!

235.      [See Matthew 22:1–14.]”19 …

236.      The Savior appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery in the Kirtland Temple.

237.      “The veil was taken from our minds,” Joseph said,

238.      “and the eyes of our understanding were opened.

239.      We saw the Lord standing upon the breastwork of the pulpit.”

240.      “The Lamb of God hath brought to pass the resurrection, so that all shall rise from the dead.”

241.      “When we reflect upon the holiness and perfections of our great Master, … our hearts melt within us for his condescension.”

Overview

God the Father is the Supreme Being in whom we believe, whom we worship, and to whom we pray. He is the ultimate Creator, Ruler, and Preserver of all things. He is perfect, has all power, and knows all things. He “has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s” (Doctrine and Covenants 130:22).

The Father of Our Spirits

One of life’s great questions is “Who am I?” A beloved Primary song helps even little children answer this question. We sing, “I am a child of God, and he has sent me here.” The knowledge that we are children of God provides strength, comfort, and hope.

Scholars have long acknowledged that the view of God held by the earliest Christians changed dramatically over the course of centuries. Early Christian views of God were more personal, more anthropomorphic, and less abstract than those that emerged later during Christianity’s creedal stage. The key ideological shift that began in the second century, after the loss of apostolic authority, resulted from a conceptual merger of Christian doctrine with Greek philosophy.

Latter-day Saints believe the melding of early Christian theology with Greek philosophy was a grave error. Chief among the doctrines lost in this process was the nature of the Godhead. Latter-day Saints hold that God the Father is an embodied being with the attributes ascribed by the earliest Christians. That belief is consistent with the early Christian views of God, yet it differs from the later creeds.

We are all literally children of God, spiritually begotten in the premortal life. As His children, we can be assured that we have divine, eternal potential and that He will help us in our sincere efforts to reach that potential.

The Supreme Creator

Heavenly Father is the Supreme Creator. Through Jesus Christ, He created heaven and earth and all things in them (see Moses 2:1). Alma said, “All things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator” (Alma 30:44).

The Author of the Plan of Salvation

Our Father in Heaven wants us to dwell with Him eternally. His work and glory is “to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man” (Moses 1:39). In order to make this possible, He prepared the plan of salvation. He sent His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to loose the bands of death and atone for the sins of the world: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). This sacrifice is the greatest expression of our Father’s love for us.

Coming to Know God the Father

As children of God, we have a special relationship with Him, setting us apart from all His other creations. We should seek to know our Father in Heaven. He loves us, and He has given us the precious opportunity to draw near to Him as we pray. Our prayers, offered in humility and sincerity, are heard and answered.

We can also come to know our Father by learning about His Beloved Son and applying the gospel in our lives. The Savior taught His disciples: “If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also. … He that hath seen me hath seen the Father” (John 14:7, 9).

We draw near to God the Father as we study the scriptures and the words of latter-day prophets and as we give service. When we follow God’s will and live as He would have us live, we become more like Him and His Son. We prepare ourselves to return to live in Their presence.

Jesus is the Living Resurrected Christ who soon will come in power and great glory to cleanse the earth of war and sin and usher in His Great Millennial Reign of love and peace and prosperity. So you may want to repent of your sins and get ready to meet Him.

The Love of Jesus Christ by Richard W Linford

THE LIVING CHRIST

THE TESTIMONY OF THE APOSTLES

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

As we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ two millennia ago, we offer our testimony of the reality of His matchless life and the infinite virtue of His great atoning sacrifice. None other has had so profound an influence upon all who have lived and will yet live upon the earth.

He was the Great Jehovah of the Old Testament, the Messiah of the New. Under the direction of His Father, He was the creator of the earth. “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:3). Though sinless, He was baptized to fulfill all righteousness. He “went about doing good” (Acts 10:38), yet was despised for it. His gospel was a message of peace and goodwill. He entreated all to follow His example. He walked the roads of Palestine, healing the sick, causing the blind to see, and raising the dead. He taught the truths of eternity, the reality of our premortal existence, the purpose of our life on earth, and the potential for the sons and daughters of God in the life to come.

He instituted the sacrament as a reminder of His great atoning sacrifice. He was arrested and condemned on spurious charges, convicted to satisfy a mob, and sentenced to die on Calvary’s cross. He gave His life to atone for the sins of all mankind. His was a great vicarious gift in behalf of all who would ever live upon the earth.

We solemnly testify that His life, which is central to all human history, neither began in Bethlehem nor concluded on Calvary. He was the Firstborn of the Father, the Only Begotten Son in the flesh, the Redeemer of the world.

He rose from the grave to “become the firstfruits of them that slept” (1 Corinthians 15:20). As Risen Lord, He visited among those He had loved in life. He also ministered among His “other sheep” (John 10:16) in ancient America. In the modern world, He and His Father appeared to the boy Joseph Smith, ushering in the long-promised “dispensation of the fulness of times” (Ephesians 1:10).

Of the Living Christ, the Prophet Joseph wrote: “His eyes were as a flame of fire; the hair of his head was white like the pure snow; his countenance shone above the brightness of the sun; and his voice was as the sound of the rushing of great waters, even the voice of Jehovah, saying:

“I am the first and the last; I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain; I am your advocate with the Father” (D&C 110:3–4).

Of Him the Prophet also declared: “And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives!

“For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father—

“That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God” (D&C 76:22–24).

We declare in words of solemnity that His priesthood and His Church have been restored upon the earth—“built upon the foundation of … apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone” (Ephesians 2:20).

We testify that He will someday return to earth. “And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together” (Isaiah 40:5). He will rule as King of Kings and reign as Lord of Lords, and every knee shall bend and every tongue shall speak in worship before Him. Each of us will stand to be judged of Him according to our works and the desires of our hearts.

We bear testimony, as His duly ordained Apostles—that Jesus is the Living Christ, the immortal Son of God. He is the great King Immanuel, who stands today on the right hand of His Father. He is the light, the life, and the hope of the world. His way is the path that leads to happiness in this life and eternal life in the world to come. God be thanked for the matchless gift of His divine Son.

THE QUORUM OF THE TWELVE

“With God, nothing is impossible.” Jesus is the Resurrected Living Christ, the Holy Messiah, the Prince of Peace, who soon will come in power and great glory to cleanse the earth of war and sin and usher in His great Millennium of peace and prosperity. So you may want to repent so your life is in order. You may want to get ready to meet Him.

“With God Nothing Shall Be Impossible”

Russell M. Nelson

Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

I echo the testimony of our beloved associate, Elder Dallin H. Oaks. With him and the other Brethren, I applaud the efforts of Latter-day Saints throughout the world who willingly serve in building the kingdom of God. Likewise, I respect those who quietly do their duty though deepening trials come their way. And I admire those who strive to be more worthy by overcoming a personal fault or who work to achieve a difficult goal.

I feel impressed to counsel those engaged in personal challenges to do right. In particular, my heart reaches out to those who feel discouraged by the magnitude of their struggle. Many shoulder heavy burdens of righteous responsibility which, on occasion, seem so difficult to bear. I have heard those challenges termed impossible.

As a medical doctor, I have known the face of adversity. I have seen much of death and dying, suffering and sorrow. I also remember the plight of students overwhelmed by their studies and of those striving to learn a foreign language. And I recall the fatigue and frustration felt by young parents with children in need. Amidst circumstances seemingly impossible, I have also experienced the joyous relief that comes when one’s understanding is deepened by scriptural insight.

The Lord has often chosen to instruct His people in their times of trial. Scriptures show that some of His lasting lessons have been taught with examples terrible as war, commonplace as childbearing, or obvious as hazards of deep water. His teachings are frequently based on common understanding, but with uncommon results. Indeed, one might say that to teach His people, the Lord employs the unlikely.

Warfare, for example, has been known since time began. Even in that ugly circumstance, the Lord has helped those obedient to His counsel. Going into battle, all would assume the obvious advantage of outnumbering an enemy. But when God’s disciple Gideon was leading an army against the Midianites, “the Lord said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many …, lest Israel vaunt themselves …, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me” (Judg. 7:2).

So the Lord directed Gideon to reduce his numbers. He first decreased the troops from twenty-two thousand to ten thousand.

Then the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are yet too many” (Judg. 7:4). So another reduction was made. Finally, only three hundred remained. Then the Lord delivered the victory to the outnumbered few (see Judg. 7:5–25).

Even more widely known than war is an understanding of childbearing. Everyone “knows” that old women do not bear children. So upon whom did the Lord call to bear Abraham’s birthright son? Sarah, at age ninety! When told this was to be, she asked a logical question: “Shall I [which am old] of a surety bear a child?” (Gen. 18:13). From heaven came this reply: “Is any thing too hard for the Lord?” (Gen. 18:14).

So decreed, she gave birth to Isaac, to carry the crucial Abrahamic covenant into the second generation (see Gen. 26:1–4, 24).

Later, for one of the most important events ever to occur, the other extreme was chosen. As all knew that an elderly woman could not bear children, it was just as obvious that a virgin could not have children. But Isaiah had made this prophetic utterance:

“The Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isa. 7:14).

When Mary was notified of her sacred responsibility, the announcing angel reassured, “For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37).

The expression deep water means danger! That very hazard challenged the Israelites led by Moses at the Red Sea (see Ex. 14). Later, they were led by Joshua to the river Jordan at flood time (see Josh. 3). In each instance, deep water was divinely divided to allow the faithful to reach their destination safely. To teach His people, the Lord employs the unlikely.

Turning to our day, have you ever wondered why the Master waited so long to inaugurate the promised “restitution of all things” (Acts 3:21)? Any competitor knows the disadvantage of allowing an opponent to get too far ahead. Wouldn’t the work of the restoration of the Church have been easier if begun earlier?

Suppose for a moment you are a member of a team. The coach beckons you from the bench and says: “You are to enter this contest. I not only want you to win; you shall win. But the going will be tough. The score at this moment is 1,143,000,000 to six, and you are to play on the team with the six points!”

That large number was the approximate population of the earth in the year 1830 when the restored church of Jesus Christ was officially organized with six members (see James Avery Joyce, sel., World Population Basic Documents, 4 vols., Dobbs Ferry, New York: Oceana Publications, Inc., 1976, 4:2214). The setting was remote and rural. By standards of the world, its leaders were deemed to be unlearned. Their followers seemed so ordinary. But with them, the work was begun. Assignments had been revealed:

  • The gospel was to be preached to every kindred, nation, tongue, and people.
  • Ordinary folk were to become Saints.
  • Redemptive work was to be done for all who had ever lived.

The great dispensation of the latter days had commenced, and they were the ones to usher it forth!

Furthermore, the Prophet Joseph Smith was unjustly held in the unspeakable isolation of a distant prison. In such obscurity, then and there, he was told by the Lord that “the ends of the earth shall inquire after thy name” (D&C 122:1).

If any tasks ever deserved the label impossible, those would seem to qualify. But, in fact, our Lord had spoken: “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible” (Matt. 19:26; see also Mark 10:27Luke 18:27). To teach His people, the Lord employs the unlikely.

A century and a half later, the burdening baton of that opportunity has now been passed to us. We are children of the noble birthright, who must carry on in spite of our foredetermined status to be broadly outnumbered and widely opposed. Challenges lie ahead for the Church and for each member divinely charged toward self-improvement and service.

How is it possible to achieve the “impossible”? Learn and obey the teachings of God. From the holy scriptures, heaven-sent lift will be found for heaven-sent duties. To so achieve, at least three basic scriptural themes loom repeatedly as requirements.

Faith

The foremost requisite is faith. It is the first principle of the gospel (see A of F 1:4). In his epistle to the Hebrews, Paul so taught. He concluded that by faith the great deeds of Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, and others were accomplished (see Heb. 11:4–34).

Prophets on the American hemisphere similarly taught the fundamental importance of faith. Moroni said it included things “hoped for and not seen” and then warned his skeptics, “Dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith” (Ether 12:6). Then he spoke of leaders whose faith preceded their miraculous deeds, including Alma, Amulek, Nephi, Lehi, Ammon, the brother of Jared, and the three who were promised that they should not taste of death (see Ether 12:13–20).

The Lord personally taught this truth to his disciples: “If ye have faith,” he said, “nothing shall be impossible unto you” (Matt. 17:20).

Faith is nurtured through knowledge of God. It comes from prayer and feasting upon the words of Christ through diligent study of the scriptures.

Focus

The second requisite I have classified as focus. Imagine, if you will, a pair of powerful binoculars. Two separate optical systems are joined together with a gear to focus two independent images into one three-dimensional view. To apply this analogy, let the scene on the left side of your binoculars represent your perception of your task. Let the picture on the right side represent the Lord’s perspective of your task—the portion of His plan He has entrusted to you. Now, connect your system to His. By mental adjustment, fuse your focus. Something wonderful happens. Your vision and His are now the same. You have developed an “eye single to the glory of God” (D&C 4:5; see also Morm. 8:15). With that perspective, look upward—above and beyond mundane things about you. The Lord said, “Look unto me in every thought” (D&C 6:36). That special vision will also help clarify your wishes when they may be a bit fuzzy and out of focus with God’s hopes for your divine destiny. Indeed, the precise challenge you regard now as “impossible” may be the very refinement you need, in His eye.

Recently I visited the home of a man terminally ill. The stake president introduced me to the man’s family. His wife demonstrated such focus when she asked for a blessing for her dying husband—not for healing, but for peace, not for a miracle, but for ability to abide to the end. She could see from an eternal viewpoint, not merely from the perspective of one weighted with the responsibilities of her husband’s day-to-day care.

Elsewhere, a mother with focus nurtures her son, crippled for the whole of this life. Daily she thanks her Heavenly Father for the privilege of laboring in love with a child for whom mortality’s vale of tears will be mercifully brief. Her focus is fixed on eternity. With celestial sight, trials impossible to change become possible to endure.

Strength and Courage

A third theme in the scriptures requisite for significant accomplishment is difficult to summarize in one word, so I shall link two to describe it—strength and courage. Repeatedly, scriptures yoke these attributes of character together, especially when difficult challenges are to be conquered (see Deut. 31:6, 7, 23Josh. 1:6, 7, 9, 18Josh. 10:251 Chr. 22:131 Chr. 28:202 Chr. 32:7Ps. 27:14Ps. 31:24Alma 43:43Alma 53:20).

Perhaps this is more easily illustrated than defined. Our pioneer forefathers are good examples. They sang, “Gird up your loins; fresh courage take” (“Come, Come, Ye Saints,” Hymns, 1985, no. 30). They feared no toil and no labor. Among them were Johan Andreas Jensen and his wife, Petra, who left their native Norway in 1863. Their family included six-week-old tiny twin daughters. As handcarts were pulled in their rugged journey, one of those little girls died along the way. The child who survived grew up to become my Grandmother Nelson!

There are pioneers in the Church today just as strong and courageous. Recently, I interviewed a married couple three days after their release as full-time missionaries in a large metropolis. “We are converts,” they said. “We joined the Church ten years ago. Even though we just completed a mission, we want to go again! But this time, we would like to volunteer for a more difficult assignment. We want to teach and serve children of God who live in remote areas of the world!”

As I countered with the grim realities of their request, they continued their expression of commitment. “Our three children and their spouses will assist with our expenses. Two of those couples have joined the Church already, and the third is equally supportive. Please send us among humble people who love the Lord and desire to know that His Church has again been restored to the earth.” Needless to say, their petition was gratefully heard, and now they have received their second call to missionary service.

Strength and courage also characterize another couple. As faithful members of the Church, they had always upheld its doctrines, including the twelfth article of faith. When their country went to war, military conscription called the dutiful husband away from his wife before either had learned she was to bear their child. He was captured by enemy troops and taken as a prisoner of war. Months elapsed. Their baby came. Still no word to know whether the new father was alive. A year after his capture, he was permitted to write to his wife.

Meanwhile, though countries apart, they each remained faithful to covenants made at baptism. Even though clothed in prisoner’s stripes and able to speak the language of his captors’ country only in a limited way, he became Sunday School superintendent of the branch. He baptized four fellow prisoners during their confinement. Three years after the war ended, he returned home to his wife and a son he had never seen. Later, he served for ten years as the first stake president of his country. Now he is a member of the presidency of one of our temples! His wife stands faithfully beside him in the privilege of that sacred assignment.

You who may be momentarily disheartened, remember, life is not meant to be easy. Trials must be borne and grief endured along the way. As you remember that “with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37), know that He is your Father. You are a son or daughter created in His image, entitled through your worthiness to receive revelation to help with your righteous endeavors. You may take upon you the holy name of the Lord. You can qualify to speak in the sacred name of God (see D&C 1:20). It matters not that giants of tribulation torment you. Your prayerful access to help is just as real as when David battled his Goliath (see 1 Sam. 17).

Foster your faith. Fuse your focus with an eye single to the glory of God. “Be strong and courageous” (2 Chr. 32:7), and you will be given power and protection from on high. “For I will go before your face,” the Lord declared. “I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up” (D&C 84:88).

The great latter-day work of which we are a part shall be accomplished. Prophecies of the ages shall be fulfilled. “For with God all things are possible” (Mark 10:27), I testify in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
