Israel. 5 Smooth Stones.

David, 5 Smooth Stones of Faith in God and Courage. by Richard W. Linford

“Thou comest to me with a sword, and a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.” “And (David) chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had …” “Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell to the earth.” (1 Samuel 17.)

What is The True Nature of God?

God our Eternal Father in Heaven lives and loves us for we are His children.

  1. It is life eternal to know God Our Eternal Father in Heaven and His Beloved Son, Jehovah Jesus Christ, Yeshua, The Holy Messiah.
  2. There are three separate Gods in heaven with whom we have affinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. Of God the Father we testify:
  3. “There is a God in heaven, who is infinite and eternal, from everlasting to everlasting the same unchangeable God, the framer of heaven and earth, and all things which are in them.” (D. & C. 20:17.)
  4. He is not a progressive being in the sense that liberal religionists profess to believe.
  5. He was not created by man.
  6. He was not a God of vengeance and war in Old Testament times and a God of love and mercy in a later New Testament era.
  7. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
  8. God is known only by revelation.
  9. He stands revealed or remains forever unknown.
  10. He cannot be discovered in the laboratory.
  11. He cannot be discovered by viewing all immensity through giant telescopes.
  12. He cannot be discovered by cataloging all the laws of nature that do or have existed.
  13. A knowledge of his powers and the laws of nature which he has ordained does not reveal his personality and attributes to men. This kind of knowledge comes only by revelation from the Holy Ghost as a consequence of obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel.
  14. Man’s purpose in life is to learn the nature and kind of being that God is, and then, by conformity to his laws and ordinances, to progress to that high state of exaltation wherein man becomes perfect as the Father is perfect. (Matt. 5:48; Teachings, pp. 342-362.)
  15. He is God Almighty.
  16. He is THE ALMIGHTY God.
  17. He is not an amorphous personage of Spirit. He is not properly defined by apostate creeds.
  18. Apostate creeds teach that God is a spirit essence that fills the immensity of space and is everywhere and nowhere in particular present.
  19. In a vain attempt to support this doctrine that God is a spirit essence, formulated by councils in the early days of the great apostasy, it is common for apologists to point to the statement in the King James Bible which says, “God is a Spirit.” (John 4:22-24.) The fact is that this passage is mistranslated; instead, the correct statement, quoted in context reads: “The hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeketh such to worship him. For unto such hath God promised his Spirit. And they who worship him, must worship in spirit and in truth.” (Inspired Version, John 4:25-26.)
  20. It is true that God may be said to be a Spirit, but this statement must be understood to mean that he is a Spirit in the same sense that a resurrected man is a spirit.
  21. When the apostles, beholding the resurrected Lord, “were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit” (Luke 24:36-43), there was not the slightest intimation that the “spirit” was a vaporous nothingness that filled immensity. Spirits are personages. God the Father is a glorified and perfected Man, a Personage of flesh and bones (D. & C. 130:22), in which tangible body an eternal spirit is housed. It is in this sense that God is a Spirit.
  • HIS NATURE IS DIVINE AND ETERNAL.
  • God the Eternal Father, our Father in Heaven, is an exalted, perfected, and glorified Personage having a tangible body of flesh and bones. (D. & C. 130:22.)
  • See Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith – History Chapter 1. (Freely available at www.churchofjesuschrist.org.
  • All men, Christ included, were born as Heavenly Father’s spirit children in pre-mortality. (D. & C. 93:21-23; Moses l; 2; 3; 4; Abra. 3:22-28.)
  • God the Father is married for eternity and we have a Heavenly Mother.
  • He is the Great Creator. Through His Son He created, which is to say organized, our universe. All things are round about and known by God the Father including past, present, and future.
  • He embodies all virtues perfectly – honesty, trustworthiness, faith, hope, charity, love, kindness, long-suffering, courage, chastity, purity, knowledge, wisdom, happiness and joy.
  • BECAUSE WE ARE HIS CHILDREN, HE ASKS THAT WE LOVE HIM AND LOVE HIS SON AND LOVE ONE ANOTHER.
  • He asks that we show our love for Him by helping Him bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of his children.
  • He asks that we show our love for Him by repenting of our sins and by keeping His commandments.
  • He asks that we show our love for Him by visiting with Him in prayer multiple times daily.
  • WE LOVE HIM BECAUSE HE FIRST LOVED US.
  • He desires to exalt his children by giving them experience in mortality, death, the resurrection, and exaltation
  • He gave his only begotten beloved son that we might not perish.
  • He sent Christ into the world to save the world not to condemn the world.
  • He forgives our sins conditional on our acceptance of Christ Jesus as our Savior and repentance of our sins.
  • He is GOD the First in the godhead.
  • He is bound by law.
  • He is Holy, Holy, Holy.
  • He is immortal which is to say He cannot and will not die.
  • He has a resurrected, glorified, perfect body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s.
  • He is an exalted being.
  • He is Perfect in Spirit, Mind, and Body.
  • He is Omnicharitable (all loving).
  • He is Omnipotent (all powerful).
  • He is Omnipresent (all present, in and through and able to communicate with all things).
  • He is Omniscient (all knowing).
  • His is the great plan of His and our Happiness.
  • In pre-mortal counsels, He announced and implemented His great plan of joy and happiness, salvation and exaltation.
  • He holds the keys of presidency of our universe.
  • He holds the keys of creation including those delegated to His Son.
  • He holds the keys of the priesthood from eternity to all eternity including those delegated to His Son.
  • He holds the keys of the resurrection delegated to His Son.
  • His Son mirrors Him in person and attributes.
  • He looks like the Son.
  • The Son looks like the Father.
  • If you know the Son, you know the Father.
  • Like His Son, He is a God of mighty miracles.

  • We come to the Father only through His Beloved Son.
  • It is the Son’s prerogative to reveal the Father to us.
  • He is our Father in Heaven.
  • He is our Holy Father.
  • He is the Father of our spirits.
  • Like His Son, He is the God of truth and cannot lie.
  • Like His Son, He is the Great Creator of our universe.
  • All of his billions if not trillions of creations were organized by His Son and are known, named and numbered to both of them.
  • We worship the Father in the name of the Holy Son.
  • We also worship the Son.
  • Heavenly Father is the only true God whom we worship in the name of His Son.
  • He is the source of good.
  • He is the supreme being in our universe.
  • He is the Supreme God we worship in the name of his son Jesus Christ.
  • He lives in eternal celestial burnings.
  • He lives in the center of our universe near great governing stars.
  • He receives and answers our prayers proferred in the name of the Son.
  • He too has a father and a mother as was rightly taught by The Prophet Joseph Smith.
  • Lucifer opposed Him and His Son.
  • In pre-existent counsels, He was opposed by his son Lucifer.
  • By Jehovah and Michael, Heavenly Father banished Lucifer with “a one third part” not “one third of” His rebellious children.
  • As consequence, Lucifer with his fallen angels became Satan the god of evil on earth together with his evil minions.
  • The Father’s Son Jesus Christ is in His express image.
  • In addition to the fact that all men are brothers in the sense that all have descended from Adam, they are also brothers in that they have the same personal Father who begat them in the spirit.
  • Pre-existence. Pre-mortal life.
  • In heaven, The Father convened the grand council and other councils to discuss the plan of salvation and exaltation.

  • Sacrament.
  • In the name of Jesus Christ, The Father blesses the sacrament as we remember His son’s atoning sacrifice, including His broken body and shed blood.
  • Fatherhood of God
  • It is only by understanding the real and literal sense in which God is our Father that we are able to understand what is meant by the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man.
  • Our Lord had reference to this when he said, “Go to my brethren, arid say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” (John 20:17.)
  • The designation Father is to be taken literally; it signifies that the Supreme Being is the literal Parent or Father of the spirits of all men. (Heb. 12:9.)
  • This is one reason men are commanded to approach Deity in prayer by saying, “Our Father which art in heaven.” (Matt. 6:9.)
  • We are His and our Heavenly Mother’s spirit children.
  • Beatitudes and Ten Commandments
  • Through His Son, He is the source of the beatitudes.
  • Through His Son, Jehovah, He is the source of the ten commandments
  • Godhead.
  • There are three Gods-the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost-who, though separate in personality, are united as one in purpose, in plan, and in all the attributes of perfection. Thus anything, in these fields, which is revealed with reference to any of them is equally true of each of the others; and hence no attempt need be made in these fields to distinguish between them.
  • By definition, . God (generally meaning the Father) is the one supreme and absolute Being; the ultimate source of our universe; the all powerlul, all-knowing, all-good Creator, Ruler, and Preserver of all things.
  • Of him, when considering the object upon which faith rests, the Prophet observes “that God is the only supreme governor and independent Being in whom all fulness and perfection dwell; who is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient; without beginning of days or end of life; and that in him every good gift and every good principle dwell; and that he is the Father of lights; in him the principle of faith dwells independently, and he is the object in whom the faith of all other rational and accountable beings centers for life and salvation.” (Lectures on Faith, p. 9.)
  • The godhead is comprised of three glorified, exalted, and perfected personages. They are the supreme presidency of the universe. (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. I, pp. 1-55.)
  • They are: God the Father; God the Son; God the Holy Ghost. (First Article of Faith.) “Everlasting covenant was made between three personages,” the Prophet said, “before the organization of this earth, and relates to their dispensation of things to men on the earth; these personages, according to Abraham’s record, are called God the first, the Creator; God the second, the Redeemer; and God the third, the witness or Testator.” (Teachings, p. 190.)
  • Though each God in the Godhead is a personage, separate and distinct from each of the others, yet they are “one God” (Testimony of Three Witnesses in Book of Mormon), meaning that they are united as one in the attributes of perfection. For instance, each has the fulness of truth, knowledge, charity, power, justice, judgment, mercy, and faith. Accordingly these three separate persons think, act, speak, and are alike in all things; and yet they are three separate and distinct entities. Each occupies space and is and can be in but one place at one time, but each has power and influence that is everywhere present. The oneness of the Gods is the same unity that should exist among the saints: (John 17; 3 Ne. 28:10-11.)
  • Perhaps no better statement defining the Godhead and showing the relationship of its members to each other has been written in this dispensation than that given by the Prophet Joseph Smith in the Lectures on Faith. “There are two personages who constitute the great, matchless, governing, and · supreme, power over all things, by whom all things were created and made, that are created and made, whether visible or invisible, whether in heaven, on earth, or in the earth, under the earth, or throughout the immensity of space. They are the Father and the Son, the Father being a personage of spirit meaning that he has a spiritual body which by revealed definition is a resurrected body of flesh and bones (I Cor. 15:44-45; D. & C. 88 :27)], glory, and power, possessing aII perfection and fullness.
  • The Son, who was in the bosom of the Father, is a personage of tabernacle, made or fashioned like unto man, or being in the form and likeness of man, or rather man was formed after his likeness and in his image; he is also the express ·image and likeness of the personage of the Father, possessing all the fullness of the Father, or the same fullness with the Father; being begotten of him, and ordained from before the foundation of the world to be a propitiation for the sins of all those who should believe on his name, and is called the Son because of the flesh, and descended in suffering below that which man can suffer; or, in other words, suffered greater sufferings, and was exposed to more powerful contradictions than any man can be. “But, notwithstanding all this, he kept the law of God, and remained without sin, showing thereby that it is in the power of man to keep the law and remain also without sin; and also, that by him a righteous judgment might come upon all flesh, and that all who walk not in the law of God may justly be condemned by the law, and have no excuse for their sins. “And he being the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth, and having overcome, received a fullness of the glory of the Father, possessing the same mind with the Father, which mind is the Holy Spirit, that bears record of the Father and the Son, and these three are one; or, in other words, these three constitute the great, matchless, governing and supreme, power over all things; by whom all things were created and made that were created and made, and these three constitute the Godhead, and are one; the Father and the Son possessing the same mind, the same wisdom, glory, power, and fullness-filling all in all; the Son being filled with the fullness of the mind, glory, and power; or, in other words, the spirit, glory, and power, of the Father, possessing all knowledge and glory, and the same kingdom, sitting at the right hand of power, in the express image and likeness of the Father, mediator for man, being filled with the fullness of the mind of the Father; or, in other words, the Spirit of the Father, which Spirit is shed forth upon all who believe on his name and keep his commandments. “And all those who keep his commandments shall grow up from grace to grace, and become heirs of the heavenly kingdom, and joint-heirs with Jesus Christ; possessing the same mind, being transformed into the same image or likeness, even the express image of him who fills all in all; being filled with the fullness of his glory, and become one in him, even as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one.” (Lectures on Faith, pp. 50-51.)
  • That exaltation which the saints of all ages have so devoutly sought is godhood itself. Godhood is to have the character, possess the attributes, and enjoy the perfections which the Father has. It is to do what he does, have the powers resident in him, and live as he lives, having eternal increase. (D. & C. 132:17-20, 37.) It is to know him in the full and complete sense, and no one can fully know God except another exalted personage who is like him in all respects. Those attaining this supreme height are sons of God (D. & C. 76:50-60); they receive the fullness of the Father and find membership in the Church of the Firstborn (D. 294 GODHOOD & C. 93:17-22); they are joint-heirs with Christ (Rom. 8:14-18), inheriting with him all that the Father hath. (D. & C. 84:33-41.) They are gods. (Ps. 82:1, 6; John 10:34-36; Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 2, pp. 35-79; Gospel Kingdom, pp. 27-30.) Joseph Smith said: “God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens! … I am going to tell you how God came to be God. We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea, and take away the veil, so that you may see …. It is the first principle of the gospel to know for a certainty the character of God, and to know that we may converse with him as one man converses with another, and that he was once a· man like us; yea, that God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth, ·the same as Jesus Christ himself did; and I will show it from the Bible . . .. “Here, then, is eternal life-to know the only wise and true God; and you have got to learn how to be gods yourselves, and to be kings and priests to God, the same as all gods have done before you, namely, by going from one small degree to another, and from a small capacity to a great one; from grace to grace, from exaltation to exaltation, until you attain to the resurrection of the dead, and are able to dwell in everlasting burnings, and to sit in glory, as do those who sit enthroned in everlasting power … . [Such persons are] heirs of God and joint-heirs with Jesus Christ. What is it? To inherit the same power, the same glory and the same exaltation, until you arrive at the station of a god, and ascend the throne of eternal power, the same as those who have gone before.” (Teachings, pp. 345-347.) Again: “Every man who reigns in celestial glory is a god to his dominions.” (Teachings, p. 374,)
  • . Christ is the God of, our Fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. (D. & C. 136:21-22; Ex. 3:1-16.) It was he who appeared to and covenanted with Abraham (Abra. 2:6-11), who was the one by whom salvation should come (I Ne. 6:4), and who was destined in due course to come into the world and be crucified for the sins of the world. (I Ne. 19:7-17.) 2. Since Abraham, who had the fulness of the gospel, worshiped both the Father and the Son, Peter and others have taken occasion, quite properly, to refer to the Father also as the God of our Fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. (Acts 3:13; 5:30; 22:14.)
  • “Every man who reigns in celestial glory is a god to his dominions,” the Prophet said. (Teachings, p. 374.) Hence, the Father, who shall continue to all eternity as the God of exalted beings, is a God of Gods. Further, as the Prophet also taught, there is “a God above the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ . … If Jesus Christ was the Son of God, and John discovered that God the Father of Jesus Christ had a Father, you may suppose that he had a Father also. Where was there ever a son without a father? … Hence if Jesus had a Father, can we not believe that he had a Father also?” (Teachings, pp. 370, 373.) In this way both the Father and the Son, as also all exalted beings, are now or in due course will become Gods of Gods. (Teachings, pp. 342- 376.)
  • Christ [the Son] is the God of Israel (I Ne. 19:7-17; 3 Ne. Il:7-17), the God of Jacob (Ps. 146:5; Isa. 2:3; D. & C. 136:21), the Lord God, the Mighty One of Israel (D. & C. 36:1), the Lord God of the Hebrews. (Ex. 3:18.) These names signify both that he came of Israel himself and also his personal, attentive care toward that chosen race. They point to his “great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his Ioving kindnesses.” (Isa. 63:7-9; D. & C. 133:52-53.) Christ is the God of Jeshurun (Deut. 33:26), meaning that he is the God of Israel. Jeshurun or Jesurun, translated as upright one, is used by Moses and Isaiah as a symbolical name for Israel. (Deut. 32: 15; 33:4-5; Isa. 44:2.) Many who do not profess belief in God as he is revealed in the scriptures, or even as he is described in the false creeds of sectarianism, yet recognizing that law prevails in the universe and among all forms of life, speak of the manifestations of this law as the God of Nature. In reality, Christ [the Son] is the God of Nature (l Ne. 19:12), for it is in and through his almighty power that all things are created, upheld, governed, and controlled. Our Father in Heaven (Matt. 6:9) is the God of Spirits (Num. 16:22; 27:16) or the Father of Spirits (Heb. 12:9), meaning that he is the literal Parent of the Spirit Christ and of all other spirits. Inasmuch, however, as Christ attained Godhood while yet in preexistence, he too stood as a God to the other spirits, but this relationship was not the same one of personal parenthood that prevailed between the Father and his offspring. Christ is the God of the Whole Earth (Isa. 54 :5; 3 Ne. 11 :14), an appellation he carries to bear record of his universal interest in all men and their salvation. He is not alone the God of the Jews, or of Israel, or of the Latter-day Saints, but of the whole earth and all life on its face. This world of carnality and lust, of every lascivious and · evil thing, belongs to Satan. He created it; he is its father and its god. All those who belong to it-all those who are carnal, sensual, and devilish- are _his children, the children of disobedience. The earth itself is the Lord’s, and he is its ruler; but the world (the corrupt society on earth) is under the rule of him who is the god of this world. “If our gospel be hid,” Paul wrote, “it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” (2 Cor. 4:3-4.) Christ is a God of Truth (Ex. 34:6; Deut. 32:4; Ps. 31 :5), meaning he is the embodiment and personification of truth. In the same sense he is the God of grace, mercy, love, righteousness, charity, integrity, and all of the attributes of godliness.

YESHUA CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE!

Richard W. Linford

Yeshua, Jesus Christ, the Holy Messiah, the Prince of Love and Peace, the Great Creator, the Perfect Man of Holiness, the Mighty God of Battle, is perfectly able to and will in fact heal your life if you turn to Him, repent of your sins, and keep His commandments.

YESHUA Can Heal Your Life!

I work at being a husband, a dad to 8, a granddad to 29, a community servant, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a witness of and for Jesus Christ.  Yeshua, Jesus Christ, is the Resurrected Living Christ who heals my life and can heal yours if you will kneel at His feet and let Him do so.

YESHUA CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE.

Able.

Yeshua, the Lord Jesus Christ, is “Able … to save [us] to the uttermost [if we] come unto [God the Father] by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for [us].” (Hebrews 7:25)  He is “Able to do all things according to his will, for [us], if it so be that [we] exercise faith in him …”.  (1 Nephi 7:12) “For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is Able to succour [we who] are tempted.” (Hebrews 2:18)

“Our God [Jehovah] whom we serve is Able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace” and from the lions. (Daniel 3:17; 3; 6) As he has “promised, he [is] Able to perform.”  (Romans 4:21)

Our “God is Able to make all grace abound toward [us].” (2 Corinthians 9:8) Jesus Christ “is Able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us. Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.”(Ephesians 3:20, 21)

“For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is Able even to subdue all things unto himself.” (Philippians 3:20-21)

He is “the Lord [who] is Able to do all things according to his will, for the children of men, if it so be that they exercise faith in him.  Wherefore, let us be faithful to him.” (1 Nephi 7:12)

For He said: “I am Able to do mine own work.” (2 Nephi 27:20)   Indeed, He “is Able to keep [us] from falling, and to present [us] faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy. To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.” (Jude 1:24-25)

Through our repentance, he is Able to lift us up when we fall.

“Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is Able to save your souls” (James 1:21) both temporally and spiritually.

The Father and The Holy Ghost are also Able.

Abrahamic Covenant.

Jesus Christ embodies the Abrahamic Covenant. God the Father is the example, source and maker of the Covenant with Abraham. “Abraham first received the gospel by baptism (which is the covenant of salvation). Then he had conferred upon him the higher priesthood, and he entered into celestial marriage (which is the covenant of exaltation), gaining assurance thereby that he would have eternal increase. Finally he received a promise that all of these blessings would be offered to all of his mortal posterity (D&C 132:29-50; Abraham 2:6-11). Included in these divine promises [of God The Father] to Abraham were the assurances that (1) Christ would come through Abraham’s lineage, and that (2) Abraham’s posterity would receive certain lands as an eternal inheritance (Genesis 17; 22:15-18; Galatians 3; Abraham 2). These promises taken together are called the Abrahamic covenant. It was renewed with Rebecca and Isaac (Genesis 24:60; 26:1-4, 24) and again with Jacob (Genesis 28; 35:9-13; 48:3-4). The portions of the covenant that pertain to personal salvation and eternal increase are renewed with each individual who receives the ordinance of celestial marriage (see D&C 132:29-33). Those of non-Israelite lineage, sometimes referred to as gentiles, are adopted into the house of Israel, and become heirs of the covenant and the seed of Abraham, through the ordinances of the gospel of Jesus Christ. (Galatians 3:26-29)  (Bible Dictionary p. 602)

Adonai.

Christ is Adonai, which in the Old Testament refers to God, literally means my Lord and is usually translated Lord.  (Elder Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine [hereafter MD], p. 23)

Advocate with the Father.

“Jesus Christ the righteous” is our Advocate with the Father, pleading our cause before The Father as we are humble and repentant. (1 John 2:1; Doctrine & Covenants [hereafter D&C] 29:5; 32:3; 62:1; 110:4; Moroni 7:28) He is our “advocate, who knoweth [our] weakness … and how to succor [us] when we are tempted.” (D&C 62:1)

He appears as our legal counsel in heaven in the presence of God the Father, advocating our cause (Moroni 7:28), saving us from our spiritual bankruptcy, conditional on our repentance. (Hebrews 9:24)  Since each of us who is of age and of a sound mind has sinned and come short of the glory of God, if we repent, we have him, Christ Jesus,  as our attorney before the bar of Justice, pleading our cause, securing for us mercy, saving us from our sins, conditionally on coming unto him and giving away those sins. (Greek: paraclete meaning advocate, helper, and intercessor, indeed he is our Savior who consoles us in our great time of judgment and need.)

“Hearken, O ye people of my church, to whom the kingdom has been given; hearken ye and give ear to him who laid the foundation of the earth, who made the heavens and all the hosts thereof, and by whom all things were made which live, and move, and have a being.

“And again I say, hearken unto my voice, lest death shall overtake you; in an hour when ye think not the summer shall be past, and the harvest ended, and your souls not saved.

“Listen to him who is your advocate with the Father, who is pleading your cause before him –

“Saying: Father, behold the sufferings and death of him who did no sin, in whom thou wast well pleased; behold the blood of thy Son which was shed, the blood of him whom thou gavest that thyself might be glorified;

“Wherefore, Father, spare these my brethren that believe on my name, that they may come unto me and have everlasting life.”

(D&C 45:1-5)

AHMAN.  SON AHMAN.

A name of God the Father is Ahman, or possibly Ah Man, a name-title meaning Man of Holiness. (Moses 6:57.) God the Father revealed himself to Adam by this name to signify that he is a Holy Man, a sacred truth which we must know and comprehend if we are to become like Him and inherit exaltation. A name of Jesus Christ is therefore Son Ahman. (1 John 3:1-3; D&C 132:19-25)  (Journal of Discourses, vol. 2, p. 342.; MD, p. 29)

“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” (1 John 3:1-3)

Almighty.  Almighty God. Lord Almighty. Lord God Almighty.

The Father is The Almighty God and The Son is The Almighty God.  Each is The Almighty God who “shall bless [us] with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb: …”(Genesis 49:25)

Each is omnipotent having unlimited power and might. Hence, each is Almighty in creation and all kinds of mighty works and miracles, healing the sick, raising  the dead, causing the lame to walk, and the blind to receive their sight,  the deaf  to hear, curing all manner of diseases, casting out devils, the evil spirits which dwell in the hearts men. (Revelation 1:8; 2 Nephi 23:6; Helaman 10:11; D&C 84:96; 121:33) (MD, p. 30)

“And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.” (Genesis 17:1-2;  28:3; 1 Nephi 17:48; D&C 20:21; 87:6; 88:106.)

Both Father and Son are designated “Lord Almighty”  and “Lord God Almighty. (2 Corinthians 6:18; D&C 84:118) “And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.” (Revelation 4:8; 11:17; 15:3; 16:7; 21:22; 1 Nephi 1:14;)

“And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshiped God, Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.” (Revelation 11:15-17; 21:22)

“O Lord God Almighty, hear us in these our petitions, and answer us from heaven, thy holy habitation, where thou sittest enthroned, with glory, honor, power, majesty, might, dominion, truth, justice, judgment, mercy, and an infinity of fulness, from everlasting to everlasting.”(Kirtland Temple dedicatory prayer.  D&C 109:77; 121:4)

“Great and marvelous are thy works, O Lord God Almighty! Thy throne is high in the heavens, and thy power, and goodness, and mercy are over all the inhabitants of the earth; and, because thou art merciful, thou wilt not suffer those who come unto thee that they shall perish!” (B of M, The prophet Lehi, 1 Nephi 1:14; 2 Nephi 9:46)

Both Father and Son are Almighty to save us from death and the fall, and from our own sins if we willingly humble ourselves and repent of our sins.

They are Almighty to create universes and worlds without number.  Of Christ, we read “that by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.” (D&C 76:24)

They are Almighty to rescue us from present physical or spiritual difficulties, pain and suffering.

“Both the Father and the Son, being omnipotent Gods, are designated by the name-titles, Almighty (Genesis 49:25; Revelation 2:8; 2 Nephi 23:6; Helaman 10:11; D&C 84:96; 121:33), Almighty God (Genesis 17:1; 28:3; 1 Nephi 17:48; D&C 20:21; 87:6; 88:106), Lord Almighty (D&C 84:118; 2 Corinthians 6:18), and Lord God Almighty. (Revelation 4:8; 11:17; 21:22; D&C 109:77; 121:4; 1 Nephi 1:14; 2 Nephi 9:46)  These designations signify that these holy beings have all power and unlimited might.  A deep sense of reverence is implicit in the use of each name-title.”  (MD, p. 30)

Alpha and Omega.  Alphus.

Christ is Alpha and Omega.  “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”  (Revelation 1:8)

“And I [John] turned to see the voice that spake with me.  And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;

“And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

“His head and his hairs were like white wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;

“And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.

“And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two edged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

“And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead.  And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:

“I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”  (Revelation 1:12-17)

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.  I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

“He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

(Revelation 21:6-8) (See Revelation 22:13; D&C 19:1; 63:60; 68:35; 75:1; 81:7; 112:34; 132:66)

Christ is not only the firstborn son and thus “the beginning of the creation of God.” (Revelation 3:14)  But also, He is the ending of God The Father’s creation.  For if we are righteous we are destined at some point to be like Him in character and capabilities.

He is the First and He is the Last:  First begotten of the dead who “loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,  “And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.  Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him.  Even so, Amen.” ((Revelation 1:17; 2:8; 22:13; 1:5-7)

“But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the Firstfruits of them that slept.” (1 Corinthians 15:20,23)

Firstborn of the Father in the spirit; First fruits of the Resurrection.  Last to present us holy and without spot to the Father.

First and Last in the sense that the Plan of Salvation and Exaltation is one eternal round beginning with Christ and ending with Christ.

He is also Alphus, a derivative of Alpha and thus He is the noblest and greatest of God’s children.  (D&C 95:17; P of G P, Abraham 3:22-24)

“One of the name-titles of Christ is Alphus (D&C 95:17), a derivative of the Greek Alpha.  Use of this title emphasizes our Lord’s high status of godhood in pre-existence; he was God from eternity; by diligence and obedience, while yet a Spirit Being, he became “like unto God” the Father.  (Abraham 3:22-24)”  (MD, p. 31)

Amen.

Christ is the “Amen, the faithful and true witness” of The Father. (Revelation 3:14)  Amen signifies ratification.  “It is in and through him that the seal of divine affirmation is placed on all the promises of the Father.” (MD, p. 32)  Christ eschews all that is evil.  He ratifies all that is good.  Amen and Amen.

Amazing Grace.

Jesus Christ is AMAZING GRACE!

In the words of John Newton,

that great slave ship Captain turned Minister:

Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound)

That sav’d a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found,

Was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,

And grace my fears reliev’d;

How precious did that grace appear,

The hour I first believ’d!

Thro’ many dangers, toils and snares,

I have already come;

‘Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,

And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promis’d good to me,

His word my hope secures;

He will my shield and portion be,

As long as life endures.

Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,

And mortal life shall cease;

I shall possess, within the veil,

A life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,

The sun forbear to shine;

But God, who call’d me here below,

Will be forever mine.

Ancient of Days.

Adam, known before his mortality as Michael the Archangel, is referred to as the Ancient of Days. Both the Father and Jesus also carry the title Ancient of Days  in that they are Alpha and Omega, the beginning and ending, having existed and governed worlds without end. (Daniel 7:9-14, 22; Revelation 1:14-15; D&C 78:16.)

Angel.

“Our Lord is called The Angel by Jacob in the blessing which he gave to Ephraim and Mannasseh.  “God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day, The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads,” he said.  (Genesis 48:15-16.)  The [Joseph Smith] Inspired Version makes no change in this statement, … It may be that the King James translators were attempting to use language in the same way when they recorded the experience of Moses at the burning bush in these words: “And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. . . . And … God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, … I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” (Exodus 3:2-6) It was not an angel in the usual sense of the word but [Jehovah] the Lord Jesus who appeared to Moses in the bush.

The passage is more meaningful if the term The Angel is interpreted in the same sense in which Jacob used it.  In this instance the Inspired Version concurs by changing the account to read, “The presence of the Lord appeared unto him, in a flame of fire in the midst of a bush” (Inspired Version, Exodus 3:2), thus showing that what the King James Version calls The Angel is The Lord.”  (MD pp. 34-35)

Anointed. Annointed One.

Christ is the Anointed One (Greek) – set apart and anointed by the Father in pre-existence councils to declare the Father’s Plan of Happiness and to work out the great atonement in our behalf.

“God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power.”  (Acts 10:38) Only “Jesus is spoken of as the Christ and the Messiah, which means he is the one anointed of [and by] the Father to be the Father’s personal representative in all things pertaining to the salvation of mankind. The English word Christ is from a Greek word meaning anointed, and is the equivalent of Messiah, which is from a Hebrew and Aramaic term meaning anointed.” (Bible Dictionary, Anoint, Anointed One, p. 609.)

“Messiah means Anointed One, and accordingly Christ is the Anointed One.  (Psalm 2; Acts 4:23-30)  He was the Anointed of the Father to carry the eternal truths of salvation to the living and to the dead.  (Isaiah 61:1-3; Luke 4:16-32; Acts 10:38)” (MD, p. 39)

Anthropomorphic God.

He and His Father are Anthropomorphic Gods. “Strictly speaking anthropomorphism is the conception that God has human attributes and characteristics; hence, people who profess to worship a personal God are sometimes said to believe in an anthropomorphic God. Actually, of course, man was created in God’s image, not God in man’s.  But since man is the inheritor of the physical form and, to some extent, the attributes and characteristics of Deity, it follows that Deity has the same form and the fulness of the attributes enjoyed by men, and so in a rather inaccurate sense it may be agreed that the true God is an anthropomorphic Being.” (MD, p. 39)  The Father has a body of flesh and bones As tangible as man’s; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us.  (Doctrine & Covenants 130:22)

Apostle. Apostle and High Priest of Our Profession.

Jesus Christ is the great Apostle of the Church. (Hebrews 3:1) This means, not that he held the ordained office of apostle in the Melchizedek Priesthood, but that he himself stands as a special witness of his own divine mission. “I am Jesus that was crucified. I am the Son of God.” is the sacred witness he bears of himself.  (John 10:36; D&C 45:52)” (MD, p. 460.)

He is “the Apostle and high priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Who was faithful [in all things to the Father who] appointed him, …” (Hebrews 3:1,2; 4:14; 10:21)  As is The Father, He is the Apostolic witness of his role as Savior and Redeemer. He is also the Apostolic witness of the Father. He is the Apostolic witness that the Father prepared the divine Plan of Happiness which if followed will lead us back into the Celestial presence of the Father from whence we came.

Atoning Sacrifice for our Sins.  Atonement.

Jesus Christ is the Atoning Sacrifice. Jesus Christ is the Atonement. There is no such thing as the atonement separate from Jesus Christ. His sacrifice of his life’s blood and body in Gethsemane and on the Cross, his agony in the garden and on the cross, atoned for the sins of all mankind. “The word [atonement] describes the setting “at one” of those who have been estranged, and denotes the reconciliation of man to God.  Sin is the cause of the estrangement, and therefore the purpose of atonement is to correct or overcome the consequences of sin. … Jesus Christ, as the Only Begotten Son of God and the only sinless person to live on this earth, was the only one capable of making an atonement for mankind.  By his selection and foreordination in the Grand Council [in heaven] before the world was formed, his divine Son-ship, his sinless life, the shedding of his blood in the garden of Gethsemane, [by his incomprehensible sufferings], by his death on the cross and subsequent bodily resurrection from the grave, he made [the] perfect atonement for all mankind.

“All are covered unconditionally as pertaining to the fall of Adam.  Hence, all shall rise from the dead with immortal bodies, because of Jesus’ atonement.  “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Corinthians 15:22), and all little children are innocent at birth.  The atonement is conditional, however, so far as each person’s individual sins are concerned [little children under age eight excepted], and touches every one to the degree that he has faith in Jesus Christ, repents of his sins, and obeys the gospel. … Sin is lawlessness 1 John 3:4); it is a refusal on men’s part to submit to the law of God (Romans 8:7).  By transgression man loses control over his own will and becomes the slave of sin (Romans 7:14), and so incurs the penalty of spiritual death, which is alienation from God (Romans 6:23).  The atonement of Jesus Christ redeems all mankind from the fall of Adam and causes all to be answerable for their own manner of life.  This means of atonement is provided by the Father (John 3:16-17), and is offered in the life and person of his Son, Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:19).”  (Bible Dictionary, Atonement, p. 617.)

Arm of the Lord.

He is the Arm of the Lord. (Isaiah 51:9-16.)

Austere Man.

The Lord Jesus is the Austere Man.  “In the parable of the pounds, the Lord agrees with the slothful servant who did not put the Lord’s money out to usury and give Him a return on his investment that He is an Austere Man who will meet out judgment, justice, penalties and punishment for both sins of omission and sins of commission.  (Luke 19:12-27; MD, 66)

Stern in appearance or manner, somber and grave, morally strict, simple and unadorned, giving little or no scope for pleasure, severe, and ascetic are dictionary definitions of the word austere, several of which definitions apply to Our Savior.

In any event, no matter what He looks like, He, Jesus The Christ, is not one to be trifled with. We may justly assume that Our Father in Heaven likewise is an Austere Man.

Author of Our Eternal Salvation. Author and Finisher of Our Faith. Author and Perfector of our Faith. Author of Salvation.

Christ, “Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the Author of Eternal Salvation unto all them that obey him” (Hebrews 5:8-9) which means that Jesus Christ accepted the Father’s Plan of Salvation in full and makes it available to us through the power of His atoning sacrifice.

As the Author and Finisher of our Faith, Author and Perfector of our Faith, He is the leader in carrying out the Plan of Salvation in behalf of all men.

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of Our Faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”  (Hebrews 12:1-2; B of M, Moroni 6:4)

Author in the sense that by following His Father’s will, with His sinless life He “wrote” the scriptures and the commandments and marked the path for each of us to follow. What manner of men and women must we be? Even as He is! (3 Nephi 27:27)

He “authored” the commandments with his finger on Sinai. “And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.”  (Exodus 31:18)

Finisher of our faith in that he purges and purifies us of sin and leads us to each successive higher realm until we too achieve perfection and enter into our rest worlds without end.

“Christ is the Author of Salvation.  This means that he made salvation available to all men in that he worked out the infinite and eternal atonement.  Paul’s statement that Christ is “the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him” (Hebrews 5:0), as the marginal reading shows, means that he is the “cause” thereof; that is, salvation is possible because of his atoning sacrifice, without this sacrifice there would be no salvation.  Paul’s other statement that Christ is “the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2), also according to the marginal reading, means that he is the “leader” in the cause of salvation.

“Christ is not the Author of Salvation in the sense that he created the plan of salvation, nor in the sense that he supposedly presented a plan of his own in the councils in heaven, which plan the Father supposedly adopted in preference to a less desirable one formulated by Lucifer.  Rather, Our Father is the Author of the plan of salvation, a plan which began to operate long before Christ was ever chosen to be the Redeemer.

“Thus when the Father presented his own plan in the pre-existent council, he asked for volunteers from whom he could choose a Redeemer to be born into mortality as the Son of God.  Lucifer offered to become the Son of God on condition that the terms of the Father’s plan were modified to deny men their agency and to heap inordinate reward upon the one [himself] working out the redemption. Christ, on the other hand, accepted the Father’s plan in full, saying, “Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever.”  Our Lord was then foreordained to a mission which in due course he fulfilled, which mission enabled him to make salvation available to all men. (Moses 4:1-4; Abraham 3:22-28) (MD, pp. 66-67)

As directed by His Father, He is the Author of the Bible. He is the Author of the Book of Mormon. He is the Author of all the inspired words of the Holy Prophets from time immemorial — Adam, Enoch, Noah, Melchizedek, Abraham, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Elijah, Peter, James, John and the ancient apostles, and all the modern Apostles and Prophets.

He is the Author of all that is good, virtuous and true.

Author of The Ten Commandments.

He, Jehovah, is the Author of The Ten Commandments having written them while on Mount Sinai with his own hand.  (Exodus 20:1-17)

And God spake all these words, saying,

I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Thou shalt not kill.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Thou shalt not steal.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

Babe of Bethlehem.

Jesus is the lowly Babe born and wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger in Bethlehem .  “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”  (Luke 2:11-12; Matthew 2:1-10; Micah 5:2; Luke 2:4, 15; 2:1-20; John 7:42)

He is the Babe hurriedly taken from Bethlehem into Egypt by Joseph and Mary in order to spare Him, for Herod would “slay all the children in Bethlehem and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under.”  (Matthew 2:16-18)

Beginning.  Beginning of the creation of God.  (Revelation 3:14) Beginning and the Ending.  Beginning and the End.  (Revelation 1:8) (See Alpha and Omega.)

“Christ is the Beginning and the End.  (D&C 35:1; 38:1; 45:7; 54:1; 61:1; 84:120; Revelation 1:8-17; 21:6; 22:13) These are English words having substantially the same meaning as the Greek Alpha and Omega.  The thought conveyed is one of timeliness, of a being who is the Beginning and the End because his “course is one eternal round, the same today as yesterday, and forever.”  (D&C 35:1) He was God “in the beginning” (John 1:1-3); he is God now; he will be God in the “end,” that is to all eternity.  The beginning is the pre-existent eternity that went before; the end is the immortal eternity that is to come.”  (MD, p. 77)

Begotten. (See Only Begotten.)

Beloved. Beloved Son.  Beloved Son of God.

He is The Beloved Son.  “This is My Beloved Son, Hear Him!”  (Joseph Smith 2:17) are the words by which the Father introduces the Son and commands men to hearken to his teachings.  (Matthew 3:17; 17:5; Mark 1:11; 9:7; Luke 3:22; D&C 93:15; 2 Nephi 31:11; 3 Nephi 11:7; 21:20) Christ is the Beloved Son, which signifies his favored, preferential, Chosen, and Beloved status.  (Moses 4:2) (MD, pp. 81-82) (And see Joseph Smith — History 1:16-17)

Beloved because of His perfect love for the Father. Beloved because of His perfect obedience to the Father. Beloved because of His perfect pre-mortal and mortal life.  Beloved because His great and singular ambition and work like that of Our Father is to bring to pass our immortality and eternal life.

At the time of Christ’s visit to the America’s just after his resurrection, a voice was first heard: “And behold, the third time they did understand the voice which they heard; and it said unto them: “Behold my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, in whom I have glorified my name – hear ye him.”  (3 Nephi 11:6-7)

Speaking at the time of his visitation in the Americas, Christ also said: “And it shall come to pass that all lyings, and deceivings, and envyings, and strifes, and priestcrafts, and whoredoms, shall be done away.  For it shall come to pass, saith the Father, that at that day whosoever will not repent and come unto my Beloved Son, them will I cut off from among my people, O house of Israel; …”  (3 Nephi 21:19-20)

After Moses was confronted by Satan (Moses 1), The Father, “The  Lord God, spake unto Moses, saying: That Satan, whom thou hast commanded [to depart] in the name of mine Only Begotten, is the same which was from the beginning, and he came before me, saying – Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor.

“But, behold, my Beloved Son, which was my Beloved and Chosen from the beginning, said unto me – Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever.  (Moses 4:1-2)

And from Joseph Smith’s account of the first vision from the Pearl of Great Price:

11. While I was laboring under the extreme difficulties caused by the contests of these parties of religionists, I was one day reading the Epistle of James, first chapter and fifth verse, which reads: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

12. Never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine. It seemed to enter with great force into every feeling of my heart. I reflected on it again and again, knowing that if any person needed wisdom from God, I did; for how to act I did not know, and unless I could get more wisdom than I then had, I would never know; for the teachers of religion of the different sects understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible.

13. At length I came to the conclusion that I must either remain in darkness and confusion, or else I must do as James directs, that is, ask of God. I at length came to the determination to “ask of God,” concluding that if he gave wisdom to them that lacked wisdom, and would give liberally, and not upbraid, I might venture.

14. So, in accordance with this, my determination to ask of God, I retired to the woods to make the attempt. It was on the morning of a beautiful, clear day, early in the spring of eighteen hundred and twenty. It was the first time in my life that I had made such an attempt, for amidst all my anxieties I had never as yet made the attempt to pray vocally.

15. After I had retired to the place where I had previously designed to go, having looked around me, and finding myself alone, I kneeled down and began to offer up the desires of my heart to God. I had scarcely done so, when immediately I was seized upon by some power which entirely overcame me, and had such an astonishing influence over me as to bind my tongue so that I could not speak. Thick darkness gathered around me, and it seemed to me for a time as if I were doomed to sudden destruction.

16. But, exerting all my powers to call upon God to deliver me out of the power of this enemy which had seized upon me, and at the very moment when I was ready to sink into despair and abandon myself to destruction—not to an imaginary ruin, but to the power of some actual being from the unseen world, who had such marvelous power as I had never before felt in any being—just at this moment of great alarm, I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me.

It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!

Bishop.  Bishop of Our Souls.

He is the Bishop of Our Souls, our “Overseer,” our ecclesiastical Shepherd, our judge in Israel, our pastor, our president, who administers temporal as well as spiritual blessings.

“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps.

“Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

“Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that

we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

“For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.”  (1 Peter 2:21-25)

Blessed and Only Potentate.

He “is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see [unless changed so as to be able to endure His presence by the Holy Spirit]: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen” (1 Timothy 6:15)

Blessed for Evermore; Blessed of God.

He is Blessed for evermore. (2 Corinthians 11:31)  Blessed by us, blessed by angels, blessed by God the Father for His loving kindness and generosity in saving us from temporal and spiritual death.

In a Messianic Psalm, we read:  “Thou art fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.” (Psalm 45:2)

Born of Mary and of the Father.

Born of Mary, He condescended to come by water and blood (1 John 5:6) made of a woman under the law. (Galations 4:4)  Begotten by God the Father, he is “the way, the truth, and the life,” having the keys and power of death and of hell and of endless lives.   (John 14:6; Revelation 1:18) He is of Royal lineage and the rightful King of Israel.  Adopted son of Joseph, He is twice son of David.  (Matthew 1:1-17) Born of God the Father, Jesus Christ had power and thus was able to overcome temptation, sin, death and the grave.

Branch.

He is the Branch (Jeremiah 23:5), we the vine which in order to take nourishment must be either a natural appendage or adopted and grafted into the Branch.

“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

“In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”  (Jeremiah 23:5-6)

“Christ is the Branch, a name applied in ancient Israel to point attention to the great truth that the promised Messiah would come in the lineage of Israel and of David, that he would be a branch or part of that illustrious line.  Through Jeremiah the Lord said: “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.  In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”  (Jeremiah 23:5-6; 33:15-17; Isaiah 11:1-5; Zechariah 3:8-10; 6:12-15)” (MD, p. 102)

Brazen Serpent.

He is the Brazen Serpent, lifted up on a pole in the wilderness by Moses (foreshadowing the crucifixion) for all who were bitten by the poisonous serpents of sin who would be healed to look upon.  (Numbers 21:4-9; 1 Nephi 17:41; Alma 33:18-22; Helaman 8:14-15)

“And [the children of Israel] journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.

“And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. [Manna]

“And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

“Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us.  And Moses prayed for the people.

“And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten when he looketh upon it, shall live.

“And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.  (Numbers 21:4-9)

Look to Christ and be resurrected and receive eternal life.  Refuse to look and you will die spiritually.  Look to Christ and live.

(John 3:14-15; Alma 33:19-22; Helaman 8:14-15)

“And he did straiten them in the wilderness with his rod; for they hardened their hearts, even as ye have; and the Lord straitened them because of their iniquity.  He sent fiery flying serpents among them; and after they were bitten he prepared a way that they might be healed; and the labor which they had to perform was to look; and because of the simpleness of the way, or the easiness of it, there were many who perished.  (1 Nephi 17:41)

“To typify Christ and point attention to the salvation which would come because he would be lifted up on the cross, Moses (as commanded by the Lord) made a brazen serpent and lifted it up on a pole. Then those of the children of Israel who were bitten by poisonous serpents were healed by looking upon the serpent, while those who refused to look died of the poisonous bites.  (Numbers 21:4-9)

This performance was a ceremony in Israel which was intended to show the people that by looking to Christ they would be saved with eternal life, but by refusing to look to him they would die spiritually.  (John 3:14-15; Alma 33:19-22; Helaman 8:14-15) The brazen serpent was kept as a symbol of Israel until the time of Hezekiah, who broke it in pieces to keep apostate Israel of his day from burning incense to it.  (2 Kings 18:4)” (MD, p. 104)

Bread of God.

He is the Bread of God. “For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.” (John 6:33)

Bread.  Bread and Water.  Bread and Wine. Bread of Life.

He is the Bread.  He is the Bread and the Water.  He is the Bread and the Wine.  He is the Bread of Life.  He is the true manna, “the true bread from heaven.”  (John 6:30-65)

“Christ is the Bread of Life.  Just as manna was showered down as bread from heaven to save ancient Israel from starvation and temporal death, so Christ came down from heaven to give living bread and living water to all men so that they might gain everlasting life.  (John 4:10-38; 6:30-65)” (MD, pp. 104-105)

“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” (John 6:30-58; 6:35,41,48,58)

He is “broken” Living Bread represented in his broken body on the cross as sacrifice and atonement for our sins, through faith on Him and repentance enabling us to re-enter the presence of God the Father and inherit eternal life.

Breath of Life.

He is the Breath of Life giving both “life and breath” to man and nature.  (Genesis 2:7; 6:17; Moses 3:7, 19; Acts 17:25; Abraham 5:7)  And from Ezekiel, speaking of the resurrection, “Thus saith the Lord God unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live.”  (Ezekiel 37:5-10)” (MD 105)

Bridegroom.

He is the Bridegroom “who shall take the Church as his bride and celebrate the glorious occasion at the marriage supper of the Lamb.” (MD, p. 106.)  (Matthew 9:15; Mark 2:19-20; Luke 5:34-35; John 3:29)

Each of us is admonished not to be a foolish virgin; but rather to take oil in our lamps, with additional oil in reserve and to spare, thereby ever standing ready and prepared for the coming of the bridegroom and the glorious wedding ceremony; for we know not the hour of the bridegroom’s coming.  We know not the hour when we will be called to meet the bridegroom.  (Matthew 25:1-13)

“Wherefore, be faithful, praying always, having your lamps trimmed and burning, and oil with you, that you may be ready at the coming of the Bridegroom — For behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, that I come quickly.  Even so.  Amen.”  (D&C 33:17-18)

Make haste to make yourself ready for the coming of the Bridgroom. (D&C 65:3; 88:92; 133:10,19) (MD, p. 106)  Christ is the Husband.

Bright and Morning Star.

He is the Bright and Morning Star, the Star come out of Jacob.

From eons ago and into the eternities far distant billions of years in the future, he will ever be our guiding Bright and Morning Star. (Revelation 22:16; Numbers 24:17; 2 Peter 2:19; Revelation 2:28)

“In speaking of a man as a star the meaning is that he is a person of brilliant qualities, who stands out pre-eminently among his fellows. Thus to single out our Lord as the Bright and Morning Star, the last bright luminary of the night to give way before the rising sun, is to testify that he is pre-eminent over all his brethren, that he is the Son of God in whom all fulness and perfection dwell.

“In this connection, and having in mind that those who gain eternal life shall be joint-heirs with Christ, it is interesting to note that such exalted persons are promised that they shall receive the morning star, that is, reach a state of pre-eminence and perfection themselves.  (Revelation 2:26-28) “And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.”  (Daniel 12:3) Peter’s statement about the day star arising in the hearts of certain of the saints, has reference also to those who shall inherit the fulness of all things. (2 Peter 1:19) (MD, pp. 106-107)

Brightness of God’s Glory.

He is the Brightness of God’s glory. (Hebrews 1:3)

“GOD, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.”  (Hebrews 1:1-4; 1:1-14)

Captain of Salvation.  Captain of Our Salvation. Captain of Man’s Salvation.

He is the Captain of our temporal and spiritual salvation.  He is Captain of man’s salvation, exaltation and glory throughout the universe.  (Hebrews 2:10) “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.  For it became him [Our Father], for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.”  (Hebrews 2:9-10)

Captain of The Lord’s Host.

He is the Captain of The Lord’s Host, the Captain of The Lord’s Army, the mighty and terrible Captain of The Lord’s Redeemed, the Captain of all mankind.  (Joshua 5:13-15) (MD, pp. 111-112)

Carpenter’s Son. Carpenter. Carpenter from Galilee.

He is the adopted son of Joseph, the Carpenter’s Son, schooled in the trade of carpentry by His father Joseph.  (Matthew 13:53-58; Mark 6:1-6; Luke 4:16-29.)  (MD, pp. 113-114) He is the Carpenter. He is the Carpenter from Galilee.

Celestial Glory. Celestial Life.

He is Celestial Glory.  He is Celestial Life.  Like His perfect Father, the perfect Son is the complete and perfect example and giver of Celestial Glory and Celestial Life.   (D&C 88:16-32; 76:70; 1 Corinthians 15:40-42; D&C 132: 19-20; 93:16-20.)  “Exaltation consists in gaining a fulness of celestial glory.  (D&C 132:19-20) Those so attaining will receive “a fulness of the glory of the Father” and be glorified in Christ as he is in the Father.  (D&C 93:16-20) The Prophet (Joseph) said that in the resurrection the righteous “shall rise again to dwell in everlasting burnings in immortal glory, not to sorrow, suffer, or die any more; but they shall be heirs of God and joint-heirs with Jesus Christ.”  (Teachings p. 347)  (MD, p. 116)

Charity.

He is Charity which is the pure love of Christ.  He is the Christ – the personification and the embodiment of the pure love of Christ which endureth forever.  In fact, He is each and every virtue so personified and so embodied and thus he may rightly be named after each such virtue.  Not only is He Charity, He is Faith.  He is Hope.  He is Peace.  He is Kindness.  He is Courage.  He is Love. The list of virtues he personifies is endless.   (Moroni 7:44-48; 8: 25-26; 2 Nephi 26:30 )

Chastisement of Our Peace.

He is the Chastisement of Our Peace.  “He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)

Chief Cornerstone. See Cornerstone.

Chief Shepherd.

He is the Chief Shepherd over all other shepherds.  Indeed, let no man forget that He “gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.”  Ephesians 4:11-15)

Chosen. Chosen of God.

He is the Chosen of God, foreordained and blessed in pre-existence to work out the atoning sacrifice and bring us to the measure of His stature if we will but follow his teachings.  (Luke 23:35) Indeed, it “pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell.”  (Col. 1:19; 2:9; Heb. 1:2) In the Son, the Father hath truly “glorified his name.”  (3 Ne. 9:15)  (MD 127)

Chosen One.

He is the Chosen One.  The Chosen One “from the beginning, because of [His] devotion, obedience, and righteousness,” The Chosen One of “the Father to play the chief part in the great, Creative, redemptive enterprises of Deity.”  The Chosen One whose work and glory it is to help The Father “bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.”   (MD, p.127; Moses 1:39)

Chrestus.

He is the Chrestus which is the name given by Greeks and Romans to Christ since they had no sacred conception of the word “anointed.”

Christ. Christ the Lamb. Christ of God.

He is Christ.  He is the Christ.  He is The Christ of God. (Luke 9:20) He is The Anointed One. (Greek) He is The Messiah. (Hebrew)  “Jesus, who is called Christ, is the firstborn of the Father in the spirit and the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh.  He is Jehovah, and was foreordained to his great calling in the Grand Councils before the world was.  He was born of Mary at Bethlehem, lived a sinless life, and wrought out a perfect atonement for all mankind by the shedding of his blood and his death on the cross.  He rose from the grave and brought to pass the bodily resurrection of every living thing and the salvation and exaltation of the faithful.  He is the greatest Being to be born on this earth — the perfect example — and all religious things should be done in his name. … He will come again in power and glory to dwell on the earth, and will stand as Judge of all mankind at the last day.”  (Bible Dictionary, Christ, po. 633.)

Christ as The Father.

Though The Father is a separate glorified holy man of flesh and bone, Christ is referred to as The Father in three separate senses.  “Although Christ — the Firstborn in the spirit and the Only Begotten in the flesh — is the Son of God the Father, and as such is a separate and distinct personage from the Father, yet there are three senses in which Christ is called the Father.  These are clearly set forth in a document entitled, “The Father and the Son: A Doctrinal Exposition by the First Presidency and the Twelve.”  (Articles of Faith, pp. 465-473; Man: His Origin and Destiny, pp. 117-129)

“1.  Christ is the Father in the sense that he is the Creator, the Maker, the Organizer of the heavens and of the earth, and all things that in them are.  (Isaiah 9:6; 2 Nephi 19:6; Mosiah 15:4; 16:15; Alma 11:38-39; Ether 4:7)

“2.  He is the Father of all those who are born again (Mosiah 27:24-29), who “are begotten sons and daughters unto God” through his atoning sacrifice (D&C 76:24), who are “spiritually begotten: through faith, thus becoming “his sons and his daughters.”  (Mosiah 5:7)

“3.  He is the Father by what has aptly been termed divine investiture of authority.  That is, since he is one with the Father in all of the attributes of perfection, and since he exercises the power and authority of the Father, it follows that everything he says or does is and would be exactly and precisely what the Father would say and do under the same circumstances.

“Accordingly, the Father puts his own name on the Son and authorizes him to speak in the first person as though he were the Father.  This is similar to the situation in which Christ puts his name on an angel so that the designated heavenly ministrant can speak in the first person as though he were Christ himself.  (Revelation 1:1; 19:9-10; 22:8-14) Thus it is that our Lord can begin a revelation by saying, “Listen to the voice of Jesus Christ,” and shortly thereafter speak of “mine Only Begotten” (D&C 29:1, 41-16), such latter expression being made by Christ but under that divine investiture of authority which permits him to speak as though he were the Father.  (D&C 93:3-5; Moses 15:1-5)

(See Father.  Father in Heaven.)

Christ Child.  Christmas Child.  True Christmas.

He is the Christ Child born in Bethlehem.  He is the Child whose birth we celebrate at Christmas time.  “Jesus grew up with his brethren, and waxed strong, and waited upon the Lord for the time of his ministry to come.  And he served under his father, and he spake not as other men, neither could he be taught; for he needed not that any man should teach him.”  (Inspired Version, Matthew 3:24-25) (Matthew 2:19-23; Luke 1:76; 2:41-52; MD, p. 131) He is the True Christmas. Notwithstanding, his true birth date is April 6th.

Christos.

He is the Christos which is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew Messias, meaning “anointed.”

Cometh in the Name of the Lord.

Jesus Christ is He who Cometh in the Name of the Lord. (Matthew 21:9; Mark 11:9)

Comforter. See Second Comforter.

Commander.

He is the Commander.  He is our Commander.  Jesus Christ has been given “for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people. … Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.  For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”  (Isaiah 55:4-10) (See Captain of the LORD’S Host.)

Compassion.

He is Compassion.  He hath carried our griefs.  “Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.  He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.  He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation?  For he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.    Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.  He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.  Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”  (Isaiah 53:4-12; Mosiah 15 )

As “he was moved with compassion on them” (Matthew 9:36; 3 Nephi 17:6) so he is moved with compassion on us.  (D&C 101:9; 64:2; 88:40)

“But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.” (Psalm 86:15)

Condescension.  Condescension of God.

He is Condescension, He is the Condescension of God his Father Elohim who with Mary brought him forth. He is the Great Jehovah who condescended to come down from His Celestial throne divine through that remarkable birth process to rescue a soul so rebellious as yours and mine.  “And it came to pass that I saw the heavens open; and an angel came down and stood before me; and he said unto me: Nephi, what beholdest thou?  And I said unto him: A virgin, most beautiful and fair above all other virgins.  And he said unto me: Knowest thou the condescension of God?  And I said unto him: I know that he loveth his children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things.  And he said unto me: Behold, the virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the Son of God, after the manner of the flesh.

And it came to pass that I beheld that she was carried away in the Spirit; and after she had been carried away in the Spirit for the space of a time the angel spake unto me, saying: Look!  And I looked and beheld the virgin again, bearing a child in her arms.  And the angel said unto me: Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Son of the Eternal Father!” (1 Nephi 11:14-21)

Conscience.

He is our Conscience even the Light of Christ.  “Every person born into the world is endowed with the light of Christ.  (Spirit of Christ or of the Lord) as a free gift.  (D&C 84:45-49) By virtue of this endowment all men automatically and intuitively know right from wrong and are encouraged and enticed to do what is right.  (Moroni 7:16) The recognizable operation of this Spirit in enlightening the mind and striving to lead men to do right is called conscience.  It is an inborn consciousness or sense of the moral goodness or blameworthiness of one’s conduct, intentions, and character, together with an instinctive feeling or obligation to do right or be good.

“Members of the Church [of Jesus Christ] are entitled to the enlightenment of the light of Christ and also to the guidance of the Holy Ghost.  If they so live as to enjoy the actual gift of the Holy Ghost, then their consciences are also guided by that member of the Godhead. (Romans 9:1)

“Every man’s conscience is pure and clean at birth.  (D&C 93:38)  But after an individual arrives at the years of accountability [8 years] his conscience begins to be blackened by his sins.  Because of disobedience one’s conscience is “seared with a hot iron” (1

Timothy 4:2); it becomes weak and defiled.  (1 Corinthians 8:7; Titus 1:15)

“Wickedness invariably leads to remorse of conscience (Alma 19:5; 42:18), and those so smitten tremble under a consciousnesss of their own guilt and filthiness before the Lord.  (Alma 12:1; 14:6; Mormon 9:3-4; John 8:9) But men are commanded to purge their consciences from dead works (Hebrews 9:14), to gain “peace of conscience” through [repentance and] “a remission of their sins.”  (Mosiah 4:3) Paul (Acts 23:1; 2 Timothy 1:3; Hebrews 13:18), King Benjamin (Mosiah 2:15, 27), and Joseph Smith (D&C 135:4), list themselves among those whose consciences were not burdened with regret or remorse.  “The free exercise of conscience” is one of the inalienable rights of man, and governments are obligated to enact and administer such laws as will preserve this right.  (D&C 134:2-5)

(MD, pp. 156-157)

Consecration.  Consecrated for Evermore.

He is Consecration.  He is Consecrated for evermore. (Heb. 7:28)  His atoning sacrifice is the great consecrated gift to all mankind.

Consolation of Israel.

He is the Consolation of Israel (Luke 2:25), consoling us in our difficulties and fallen state.

Cornerstone. Chief Cornerstone. Corner Stone of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is the Cornerstone. “Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name in heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:10-12) “Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. (1 Peter 2:6-8.) He is the Chief cornerstone rejected by the builders at the meridian of time.  (Eph. 2:20) “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of god; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord; In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.”  (Eph. 2:19-22) He is the Corner Stone of the Church (Eph. 2:20), the stone the builders rejected.  (Jacob 4:15; Eph. 2:19)

Counsellor.

Counselor.

He is Counselor to the Father.  He is Counselor to all mankind as to the Way to Perfection.  “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”  (Isaiah 9:6; 2 Nephi 19:6.)    Indeed, no man has been His counselor.  “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!  For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counselor?  Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?  For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever.  Amen.”  (Romans 11:33-36) “For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him?”  (1 Corinthians 2:16) “Wherefore, enter ye in at the gate, as I have commanded, and seek not to counsel your God.  Amen.”  (D&C 22:4) He is Counselor to each of us in our infirmities.

Courtesy.

He is Courtesy.  Courteous to all and in singular fashion to women, little children, and all with special needs.  As is true with all virtues, “Courtesy is a natural outgrowth of the refining influence of the Spirit of the Lord.  It presupposes the presence of kindness and an inherent consideration for the comfort and well being of others.  Peter summed up the doctrine of the Church in this field by saying simply: “Be courteous.”  (1 Peter 3:8) (MD, p. 166)

Covenant Keeper.

He is the perfect Covenant Keeper, from all eternity to all eternity perfectly keeping Covenant with The Father, with all mankind, and with all life forms throughout the universe.

Creator. Creator of All Things.

He is the Creator. (John 1:3.) He is the Son and Creator by whom God the Father made billions of stars, worlds, heavens and kingdoms.  (Hebrews 1:2)  He is the Creator “and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.” (1 Corrinthians 8:6)

Cross.  Crucifixion.

In symbolic sense, He is the Cross.   He is the Crucifixion.  And the Cross and the Crucifixion are synonymous with Christ.  “Because of its association with our Lord, the cross has come to have symbolic meaning for those who profess belief in his atoning blood.  Paul properly used the cross of Christ to identify to the mind the whole doctrine of the atonement, reconciliation, and redemption.  (1 Corinthians 1:17-18; Galatians 6:12-14; Ephesians 2:8-21; Philippians 2:5-9; 3:18; Colosians 1:20; 2:14; Hebrews 12:2) (MD, pp. 172-173)

Crowned with Glory and Honour.

He is the one Crowned with an eternal fullness and weight of Glory and Honour. (Heb. 2:9) And he promises us that same fulness if we are faithful.

Crucified One.

He is the Crucified One.  Then  Pilate “delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified.  And they took Jesus, and led him away.  And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha; Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.”  (John 19:16-18)

“And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

And sitting down they watched him there; And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”  (Matthew 27:35-37)

Davidic Descent

He is of Davidic Descent, from Mary and from His step father Joseph, both being of the House and the Lineage of David.  (Matt. 1; Luke 3; Genealogies of Joseph and Mary, Talmage, Jesus the Christ, pp. 89-90)

Dayspring.

He is the Dayspring. He is the Sunrise of all sunrises. He is the dawn and beginning of the new day. He is the beginning of the new era. He is the beginning of a new order of things. – W.B. Yeats. (Luke 1:76.)

Day Star.

He is the Day Star.  “And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.  We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: …”  (2 Peter 1:18-19)

Deity.

He is Deity.  He is God.  “The word deity itself connotes a condition of divinity, or of divine nature or rank.”  (MD, p. 189)

Deliverer.

He is our Deliverer (Rom. 11:26) delivering us from the wrath which is to come. (1 Thess. 1:10) And His deliverance is from God’s wrath which shall be poured out upon the wicked without measure. Indeed, it is from His wrath that he delivers us.  His wrath kindled against sin and evil shall be turned aside conditional upon our righteous desires and repentance.  He delivers us from our temporal and spiritual difficulties.  Though each of us has sinned and come short of the glory of God, He did no sin in order that we might be forgiven of our sins if we but come unto Him and repent. (1 Pet. 2:22)  He died and rose from the grave that we as well might die and rise in a glorious resurrection. (1 Thes. 4:14)

Desire of All Nations.  Desire of the Nations. (Haggai 2:7)

He is the Desire of All Nations.  Though he had “no beauty that we should desire him” (Isaiah 53:2; Mosiah 14:2), yet he is the “desire of all nations” that “shall come.”  (Hagai 2:7) He is the white and glorious fruit, desirable above all other fruit, hung yea crucified on the tree.  (1 Nephi 8:12; 1 Nephi 11.)

Devotion.

He is perfect Devotion. “True devotion consists in a man loving and worshiping [God The Father and God The Son] with all his heart, and with all his might, mind and strength.  It presupposes that he will keep the commandments, walk uprightly, serve in the Church with an eye single to the glory of God, and put first in his life the things of God’s kingdom.  True devotion to the end gives an absolute guarantee of eternal salvation.”  (MD, p. 196)  From the beginning, who but Christ has shown forth perfect Devotion to the Father’s will and plan of happiness?

Diligence.

He is Diligence. “To endure to the end requires diligence – that is, determination, perseverance, application to duty, zeal, industry, heed to counsel.  Continuing diligence in church service is a mark of testimony, conversion, and spiritual stability.  “Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.  (James 1:22)” (MD, p. 197) From the beginning, The Son has been perfectly diligent in carrying out The Father’s will.

Discernment.  Discernment and Insight.

He is Discernment.  He is Discernment and Insight, having distinguished “between good and evil from the beginning (Moroni 7:12-18), between the righteous and the wicked (D&C 101:95; Malachi 3:18; 3 Nephi 24:18), between false or evil spirits and those spirits who truly manifest the things of God.  (D&C 46:23; 1 Corinthians 12:10), … knowing “even “the thoughts and intents of the heart” (D&C 33:1; Hebrews 4:12).”  (MD, p. 197)

Disciple.  True Disciple.  Discipline.

He is the Disciple.  He is the True Disciple.  He is Discipline.  Who but our Savior has been the perfect Disciple of the Father, the True Disciple of the Father, the perfectly Disciplined Son of the Father.  He said in the Garden of Gethsemane “not as I will, but as thou wilt” to His Father.  (Matthew 26:39)

Divinity.  Divine Son. Divine Son of God.

He is Divinity.  He is the Divine Son of God the Father.  Divine because the Father is Divine and because as Jehovah God he embodies the perfect divine nature.  (2 Peter 1:4)

Doctrine. True Doctrine.

He is Doctrine.  He is the True Doctrine of the Father.  “My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.” (John 7:16) “And now, my beloved brethren, after ye have gotten into this strait and narrow path, I would ask if all is done?  Behold, I say unto you, Nay; for ye have not come thus far save it were by the word of Christ with unshaken faith in him, relying wholly upon the merits of him who is mighty to save.  Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men.  Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life.  And now, behold, my beloved brethren, this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God.  And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end.  Amen.”  (2 Nephi 31:21)

Door.  Door of the Sheep.

He is the Door of the sheep. (John 10:7, 9) We are the sheep; and through Him who is the Door we enter green pastures in this life and pastures of eternal life and joy in the life to come.

Duty.  Dutiful Son.

He is the personification of Duty.  He is the Dutiful Son.

Easter.

He is Easter. He is the Resurrection and the Life we celebrate at Easter.

Ehyeh.

He is Ehyeh.  “The Hebrew, Ehyeh, signifying I Am, is related in meaning and through derivation with the term Yahveh or Jehovah; …” (Jesus The Christ, p. 36)

Elder Brother.

He is our Elder Brother, “the firstborn among many brethren” (Romans 8:29), and we are “called and prepared from the foundation of the world” to bear his holy priesthood “after the order of his Son, to teach these things unto the people.” (Alma 13:1-3, 4-31) “Christ is literally our Elder Brother.  Since all men are the personal spirit children of the Father, and since Christ was the Firstborn spirit offspring, it follows that he is the Elder Brother of all men.” (MD, p. 214)

Though it is a fact that He is our Elder Brother, yet because He is the Only Begotten Son of the Father, and because of His exalted station as God, and lest we in any way demean His supreme atoning sacrifice and accomplishment and personage, we do not refer to him as our Elder Brother, for He has become like the Father in every way; He has gone from grace to grace until he became  perfect even as the Father is perfect.  Indeed, He has said, in order to more readily lift us up to higher levels: “Old things are done away, and all things have become new.  Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect.”  (3 Nephi 12:47-48)

Elect of God.

He is the Elect of God. (Isaiah 42:1)

Elias.

He is Elias.  “Anciently two Eliases were spoken of, one as a preparer and the other a restorer.  John [the Baptist] was sent to prepare the way for Jesus, Jesus himself being the Restorer who brought back the gospel and the Melchizedek Priesthood to the Jews in his day.  (Joseph Smith Translation John 1:20-28) ) (Bible Dictionary, p. 663)

Elohim, Son of.

He is the Son of Elohim.  “The name Elohim is of frequent occurrence in the Hebrew texts of the Old Testament, though it is not found in our English versions.  In form the word is a Hebrew plural noun; but it connotes the plurality of excellence or intensity, rather than distinctively of number.  It is expressive of supreme or absolute exaltation and power.  Elohim, as understood and used in the restored Church of Jesus Christ, is the name-title of God the Eternal Father, whose firstborn Son in the spirit is Jehovah – the Only Begotten in the flesh, Jesus Christ.” (Jesus The Christ, p. 38)

Emmanuel.

He is Emmanuel (Matthew 1:23; Isaiah 7:14; 8:8; Matthew 1:23),  the long awaited Messiah.  (See Immanuel.)

Empathy.

He is perfect Empathy.  For he has gone “forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.  And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.”  (Alma 7:11-12)

End of the Law. End of the Law for Righteousness.

He is the End of the law for righteousness. (Romans 10:4)  All laws of righteousness begin, center and end in him.

Endless.

The name of the Father is “Endless.”  “Endless is one of the names of God and signifies his unending, eternal continuance as the supreme, exalted ruler of the universe.” (MD, p. 226)  “Behold, I am the Lord God Almighty, and Endless is my name,” he said, “for I am without beginning of days or end of   years; and is not this endless?”  (Moses 1:3; 7:35) “Endless is my name” he said to the Prophet.  (D&C 19:10)

By using his name Endless and by combining it with other terms, the Lord has revealed some very significant truths in the scriptures.  For instance: Endless life means God’s life’ “Endless punishment is God’s punishment.”  (D&C 19:12) (MD, p. 226) Christ is also Endless.

Endurance.  Enduring to the End.

He is Endurance.  His has ever been a life of patiently Enduring to the End no matter the burden placed upon Him by The Father.  (Hebrews 6:15)  “His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.  Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.  And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.”  (Psalms 72:17-19) The “glory of the Lord shall endure for ever.” (Psalms 104:31) “His mercy endureth for ever.”  (Psalms 106:1) “His righteousness endureth for ever.”  (Psalms 111:3) “The word of the Lord endureth for ever.”  (1 Peter 1:25)  He is the Christ – “He that endureth to the end.”  (Matthew 10:22) When we endure to the end, we too shall be lifted up.  (1 Nephi 13:37; D&C 18:22; Articles of Faith 13)

Eternal.  The Eternal.  The Eternal One. Eternal Father. Eternal God. Eternal Head. Eternal Judge. Eternal Judge of Quick and Dead.

“One of the names of God [the Father] is Eternal; [likewise Endless and Eternal are the names of the Son]; to Enoch the Lord said, “Eternal is my name” (Moses 7:35), using this designation as a noun and not as an adjective.  This name of Deity signifies that he is “infinite and eternal, from everlasting to everlasting the same unchangeable God.”  (D&C 20:17) In fact, each member of the godhead, possessing the same characteristics and attributes, is “infinite and eternal, without end.  (D&C 20:28, 77, 79; 121:32; 128:23) (MD, p. 223)

“The Lord uses his name Eternal to teach with specific accurateness certain great principles of revealed truth.  Thus the kind of life he lives (which, of course, is God’s life) is called eternal life (meaning exaltation); and the kind of punishment which is dealt out to transgressors by him is called eternal punishment, a name having reference to the type and not the duration of the penalty imposed.”

(MD, p. 233)

Eternal Life.

He is Eternal Life.  (1 Jn 5:11, 20) He is the embodiment of the “kind of life that our Eternal Father lives.”  (MD, p. 237)  He is the embodiment of “God’s life.”  “Eternal life is not a name that has reference only to the unending duration of a future life; immortality is to live forever in the resurrected state, and by the grace of God all men will gain this unending continuance of life.  But only those who obey the fulness of the gospel law will inherit eternal life.  (D&C 29:43-44) It is “the greatest of all the gifts of God” (D&C 14:7), for it is the kind, status, type, and quality of life that God himself enjoys.  Thus those who gain eternal life receive exaltation; they are sons of God, joint heirs with Christ, members of the Church of the Firstborn; they overcome all things, have all power, and receive the fulness of the Father.  They are gods.” (MD, p. 237) “Those who gain eternal life (exaltation) also gain eternal lives, meaning that in the resurrection they have eternal “increase,” “a continuation of the seeds,” a “continuation of the lives.”  Their spirit progeny, like that of Abraham, will “continue as innumerable as the stars; or, if ye were to count the sand upon the seashore ye could not number them.”  (D&C 131:1-4; 132:19-25, 30, 55) (MD 238)

Eternity to All Eternity.  Everlasting to Everlasting.

He is Eternity to all eternity.  He is Everlasting to Everlasting.  “Having in mind this eternal, unending repetition of the eternal plan of creation, redemption, and salvation, it is plain what our Lord meant when he said he was “from all eternity to all eternity.”  (D&C 39:1), and also when he said of himself, “From eternity to eternity he is the same, and his years never fail.”  (D&C 76:4)

In other words Christ, as an eternal, exalted Being never varies; from one eternity to the next he is the same.  From pre-existence to post-existence his course goes on in one eternal round, and so will it be with all exalted beings.  Those who become gods will then be from eternity to eternity, everlastingly the same, always possessing the fulness of all things and multiplying their race without end.  (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, pp. 10-12)” (MD, p. 240)

“Both the Father and the Son are known by the sacred name-title, Everlasting God.  (Genesis 21:33; Isaiah 9:6; 40:28; Jeremiah 10:10; Romans 16:26; D&C 133:34) Carrying as it does a connotation of eternal continuance and unending existence, this designation of Deity points up the sharp contrast between the living Gods and the false and temporary gods of the world.”  (MD, p. 243)

Everlasting Father.

He is the Everlasting Father.  Through his perfection he has become like God the Eternal Father Elohim in every way.  Thus, he is referred to as the Everlasting Father for he represents The Father (Isaiah 9:6) and he is able and willing and determined to love and lift us to our divine potential which is to become more and more like Him and His Father until the perfect day.

“One of Isaiah’s great Messianic prophecies names Christ as “The everlasting Father” (Isaiah 9:6), an expression having reference both to our Lord’s everlasting godhood and to the special senses in which he stands as the Father.  Since God the Father is both an everlasting Being and the Father of the spirits of men, he also may properly be called the Everlasting Father.”  (MD p. 243)

Exaltation.

He is Exaltation.  “We ask, then, where is the prototype?  Or where is the saved being?  We conclude, as to the answer of this question, there will be no dispute among those who believe the Bible, that it is Christ: all will agree in this, that he is the prototype or standard of salvation; or, in other words, that he is a saved being.  And if we should continue our interrogation and ask how it is that he is saved, the answer would be – because he is a just and holy being; and if he were anything different from what he is, he would not be saved; for his salvation depends on his being precisely what he is and nothing else; for if it were possible for him to change, in the least degree, so sure he would fail of salvation and lose all his dominion, power, authority and glory, which constitute salvation; for salvation consists in the glory, authority, majesty, power and dominion which Jehovah possesses and in nothing else; and no being can possess it but himself or one like him. … These teachings of the Savior most clearly show unto us the nature of salvation, and what he proposed unto the human family when he proposed to save them – that he proposed to make them like unto himself, and he was like the Father, the great prototype of all saved beings; and for any portion of the human family to be assimilated into their likeness is to be saved; and to be unlike them is to be destroyed; and on this hinge turns the door of salvation.”  (Joseph Smith, Lectures on Faith, pp. 63-67)

Excellent.  Excellence.  Excellency.

He is Excellent.  He is Excellence.  He is Excellency.   He is distinguished by His superiority to all others, surpassing all of us in virtue, accomplishment and achievement.

Example. Exemplar.

He is Our Exemplar, our perfect example. (1 Pet 2:21)

Expiation.  Expiator.

He is our Expiation.  He is the Expiator.  He made satisfaction or atonement for sin.  He extinguished guilt by suffering.  Conditional on repentance, we may take advantage of his Expiation that our guilt may be extinguished.  (MD 260)

Express Image of His Person.

He is the Express Image of God the Father’s Person.  (Heb. 1:3)

Faith.  Faith and Works.  Faithfulness.

He is Faith.  He is Faith and Works.  He is Faithfulness.  As Paul said to the Galatians, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”  (Galatians 2:20) And to the Ephesians, Paul said: “In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.  Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.  For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.  That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your heart by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” (Ephesians 3:12-19) And to the Hebrews, “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)” (Hebrews 10:23) Indeed, we may substitute the name of Christ with and for each use of the word faith in Hebrews chapter 11.)

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the same, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.  (Hebrews 12:1-2)  A first principle of the gospel is to have our faith IN the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ.  (Articles of Faith, 4th.)

Faithful and True.

He was Faithful and True under all temptations and conditions, even unto death, and will be Faithful and True throughout the eternities to come. “And I saw heaven opened,” wrote John, “and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.  His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.  And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.  And the armies which are in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.  And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”(Revelation 19:11) And only through him may we be faithful and true in all temptations and conditions even unto death.

Faithful Witness.

He is the Faithful Witness (Revelation 1:5) of the Father, of himself, of the Holy Ghost, of all gospel truths and virtues, of the holy prophets and apostles including but not limited to Adam, Able, Seth, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, John the Baptist, Peter, James, and John, Joseph Smith and his successors, thru the ages until the present day and throughout the future.

Father.  Father of Heaven and Earth. Father in Heaven.  Elohim.

He is referred to as the Father and as Father in Heaven, not to be confused with Our Father in Heaven Elohim, Father of our spirits.  “And because he (Abinadi) said unto them that Christ was the God, the Father of all things, and said that he should take upon him the image of man, and it should be the image after which man was created in the beginning; or in other words, he said that man was created after the image of God, and that God should come down among the children of men, and take upon him flesh and blood, and go forth upon the face of the earth – And now, because he said this, they did put him to death; …” (Mosiah 7:27-28) “And because he dwelleth in flesh he shall be called the Son of God, and having subjected the flesh to the will of the Father, being the Father and the Son – The Father, because he was conceived by the power of God; and the Son, because of the flesh; thus becoming the Father and Son – And they are one God, yea, the very Eternal Father of heaven and of earth.  And thus the flesh becoming subject to the Spirit, or the Son to the Father, being one God, suffereth temptation, and yieldeth not to the temptation, but suffereth himself to be mocked, and scourged, and cast out, and disowned by his people.  And after all this, after working many mighty miracles among the children of men, he shall be led, yea, even as Isaiah said, as a sheep before the shearer is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.

“Yea, even so he shall be led, crucified, and slain, the flesh becoming subject even unto death, the will of the Son being swallowed up in the will of the Father.  And thus God breaketh the bands of death, having gained the victory over death; giving the Son power to make intercession for the children of men – Having ascended into heaven, having the bowels of mercy; being filled with compassion towards the children of men; standing betwixt them and justice; having broken the bands of death, taken upon himself their iniquity and their transgressions, having redeemed them, and satisfied the demands of justice.”  (Mosiah 15:2-9)

“Although Christ – the Firstborn in the spirit and the Only Begotten in the flesh – is the Son of God the Father, and as such is a separate and distinct personage from the Father, yet there are three senses in which Christ is called the Father.  These are clearly set forth in a document entitled, “The Father and the Son: A Doctrinal Exposition by the First Presidency and the Twelve.”  (Articles of

Faith, pp. 465-473; Man: His Origin and Destiny, pp. 117-129)

“1.  Christ is the Father in the sense that he is the Creator, the Maker, the Organizer of the heavens and of the earth, and all things that in them are.  ( Isaiah 9:6; 2 Nephi 19:6; Mosiah 15:4; 16:15; Alma 11: 38-39; Ether 4:7)

“2.  He is the Father of all those who are born again (Mosiah 27:24-29), who “are begotten sons and daughters unto God” through his atoning sacrifice (D&C 76:24), who are “spiritually begotten” through faith, thus becoming “his sons and his daughters.” (Mosiah 5:7)

“3.  He is the Father by what has aptly been termed divine investiture of authority.  That is, since he is one with the Father in all of the attributes of perfection, and since he exercises the power and authority of the Father, it follows that every thing he says or does is and would be exactly and precisely what the Father would say and do under the same circumstances.  Accordingly, the Father puts his own name on the Son and authorizes him to speak in the first person as though he were the Father.  This is similar to the situation in which Christ puts his name on an angel so that the designated heavenly ministrant can speak in the first person as though he were Christ himself.  (Revelation 1:1; 19:9-10; 22:8-14) Thus it is that our Lord can begin a revelation by saying, “Listen to the voice of Jesus Christ,” and shortly thereafter speak of “mine Only Begotten” (D&C 29:1, 41-46), such latter expression being made by Christ, but under that divine investiture of authority which permits him to speak as though he were the Father.  (D&C 93:3-5; Mosiah 15:1-5) (MD 278)

Finisher. Finisher of Our Faith.

He is the Finisher of Our Faith. “Look … unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2.)

First and The Last.

He is the First and The Last. (See Alpha and Omega.)

“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.  And I turned to see the voice that spake with me.  And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

“His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; And his feet like ;unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.  And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two edged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.  And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead.  And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold I am alive forevermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” (See Revelation 1: 10-18; 2:8; 22:13)

First Begotten.  First Born.  First Born From the Dead.  First Begotten of the Dead. First Fruits.

He is The First Begotten of the Father in the flesh, born of that Holy union of God the Father and Mary.  (Hebrews 1:6)  He is the First Born spirit child of The Father in pre-existence.  He is The First Begotten of the Dead in the resurrection.    (Revelation 1:5)  He is the First Fruits of them that slept.  (1 Corinthians 15:20,23)

First Christian.

He is the First Christian among the children of God The Father from pre-existence.  He is preeminent among all God’s children.

First Counselor.

He is The First Counselor.  He is The high and exalted First Counselor and member of the Godhead, the First Counselor in the Presidency of the Universe.

First Fruits.

“Jesus Is Our Redeemer. With all my heart and the fervency of my soul, I lift up my voice in testimony as a special witness and declare that God does live. Jesus is His Son, the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh. He is our Redeemer; He is our Mediator with the Father. He it was who died on the cross to atone for our sins. He became the first fruits of the Resurrection. Because He died, all shall live again. ‘Oh, sweet the joy this sentence gives: “I know that my Redeemer lives!’” (President Thomas S. Monson, “I Know That My Redeemer Lives!” Ensign or Liahona, May 2007, 25.)

Flame of Fire.

He is like the Flame of Fire.

“1.  The veil was taken from our minds, and the eyes of our understanding were opened.

“2.  We saw the Lord standing upon the breastwork of the pulpit, before us; and under his feet was a paved work of pure gold, in color like amber.

“3.  His eyes were as a flame of fire; the hair of his head was white like the pure snow; his countenance shone above the brightness of the sun; and his voice was as the sound of the rushing of great waters, even the voice of Jehovah, saying:

“4.  I am the first and the last; I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain; I am your advocate with the Father.

“5.  Behold, your sins are forgiven you; you are clean before me; therefore, lift up your heads and rejoice.”

“6.  Let the hearts of your brethren rejoice, and let the hearts of all my people rejoice, who have, with their might, built this house to my name.

“7.  For behold, I have accepted this house, and my name shall be here; and I will manifest myself to my people in mercy in this house.

“8. Yea, I will appear unto my servants, and speak unto them with mine own voice, if my people will keep my commandments, and do not pollute this holy house.

“9. Yea the hearts of thousands and tens of thousands shall greatly rejoice in consequence of the blessings which shall be poured out, and the endowment with which my servants have been endowed in this house.

“10.  And the fame of this house shall spread to foreign lands; and this is the beginning of the blessing which shall be poured out upon the heads of my people. Even so.  Amen.

(D&C 110:1-10)

Forerunner.

He is The Forerunner having traveled the path we must follow.  “Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.” (Hebrews 6:17-20)

Forgiveness.  The Miracle of Forgiveness.

He is Forgiveness to those of us who repent and keep His commandments; for the Son of Man hath power to forgive sins.  (Matthew 9:6) “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; . . .” (Ephesians 1:7-8) He is The Miracle of Forgiveness.  (President Spencer W. Kimball, The Miracle of Forgiveness) And when we repent, he remembers our sins no more.

Fortress.

He is the Rock and the Fortress. He is “my Rock, and my Fortress.”  (2 Samuel 22:2; Psalm 18:2)

Foundation of the Church.

He is The Foundation of the Church and of eternal life and lives. “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”  (1 Corinthians 3:11)

Freedom.  The Spirit of Freedom.

He is Freedom.  For Christ the Savior, yes, the then Spirit of God, was and is the Spirit of Freedom from all sin and oppression.  (Alma 61:15)

Full of Grace and Truth.

He is Full of Grace and Truth.  “And I, John, bear record that I beheld his glory, as the glory of the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth, even the Spirit of truth, which came and dwelt in the flesh, and dwelt among us.  And I, John, saw that he received not of the fulness at the first, but received grace for grace;

“And he received not of the fulness at first, but continued from grace to grace, until he received a fulness; And thus he was called the Son of God, because he received not of the fulness at the first.  And I, John, bear record, and lo, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Ghost descended upon him in the form of a dove, and sat upon him, and there came a voice out of heaven saying: This is my beloved Son.  And I John, bear record that he received a fulness of the glory of the Father; And he received all power, both in heaven and on earth, and the glory of the Father was with him, for he dwelt in him.”  (D&C 93: 11-17)

Fulness.  Fulness of the Father.  The Fulness of All Good Things.

He is Fulness; He is The Fulness of the Father; He is The Fulness of All Good Things.  “The expression fulness of the Father has reference to his position of power, glory, perfection, and godhood.  The “fulness of the glory of the Father” consists in the possession of “all power, both in heaven and on earth.”  (D&C 93:16-17) God is an exalted Man, and exaltation consists in having the fulness of all powers, all attributes, and all perfections.  (D&C 76; 93; 132)

“The plan of exaltation is one whereunder those who fill the full measure of their creation are able to progress to that state wherein they will gain the fulness of the Father.  Christ is the Exemplar; he went from grace to grace until finally after the resurrection he gained the fulness of all things, including the fulness of truth, knowledge, and power.  (Matthew 28:18; D&C 93:6-30)

“Obedience to the whole law of the whole gospel, including the crowning ordinance of celestial marriage, is the way whereby the fulness of the Father may be gained.  Those so married, who keep their covenants, shall go on “to their exaltation and glory in all things, … which glory shall be a fulness and a continuation of the seeds forever and ever.  Then shall they be gods.”  (D&C 132:6, 19-20; Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 2, pp. 24, 44-45, 62-63)

“Joseph Smith taught: “All those who keep his [the Father’s] commandments shall grow up from grace to grace, and become heirs of the heavenly kingdom, and joint heirs with Jesus Christ; possessing the same mind, being transformed into the same image or likeness, even the express image of him who fills all in all; being filled with the fulness of his glory, and become one in him, even as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one. …  As the Son partakes of the fulness of the Father through the Spirit, so the saints are, by the same Spirit, to be partakers of the same fulness, to enjoy the same glory; for as the Father and the Son are one, so, in like manner, the saints are to be one in them.  Through the love of the Father, the mediation of Jesus the Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, they are to be heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Jesus Christ.”  (Lectures on Faith, pp. 50-52; 3 Nephi 28:10-11)  (MD 300)

Galilean.  The Man from Galilee.

He is the Galilean.  He is the Man from Galilee.  He is from Nazareth of the Roman province of Galilee.

(Mathew 21:11; Luke 23:507; John 7:41-42)

Gate. Strait Gate. Gatekeeper. The Door.

He is the Strait Gate. He is the Gatekeeper. He is the Door.

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

“Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14.)

“ I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.” (John 10:9)

“… one golden thread of singular importance ran through this study. It was the belief that one day each of us would have to account for our actions to the Lord. Many believed that ‘the keeper of the gate is the Holy One of Israel; and he employeth no servant there; and there is none other way save it be by the gate; for he cannot be deceived for the Lord God is his name [2 Nephi 9:41]. President James E. Faust, “Who Do You Think You Are? New Era, Mar. 2001, 607.)

Gifts of God.  Gifts of the Spirit.

He is the Gifts of God.  He is the Gifts of the Spirit.

From the Book of Mormon prophet Moroni we learn that the gifts of God come from Christ.  “And all these gifts come by the Spirit of Christ; and they come unto every man severally, according as he will.  And I would exhort you, my beloved brethren, that ye remember that every good gift cometh of Christ.”  (Moroni 10:17-18, 8-34)  Not only is He the giver of all good gifts.  He is the perfect expression of all good gifts.

Seek ye the best gifts, which is to say, seek to become like Jesus Christ. (Doctrine and Covenants 46 in particular verse 8)

Giver of Salvation to All.

He is the Giver of Salvation to all.  “And moreover, I say unto you, that there shall be no other name given nor any other way nor means whereby salvation can come unto the children of men, only in and through the name of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent.

“For behold he judgeth, and his judgment is just; and the infant perisheth not that dieth in his infancy; but men drink damnation to their own souls except they humble themselves and become as little children, and believe that salvation was, and is, and is to come, in and through the atoning blood of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent.”  (Mosiah 3:18; Jonah 2:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:9)

Glory of the Lord.

He is the “Glory of the LORD GOD and FATHER Elohim.

“3. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

“4. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:

“5. And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

(Isaiah 40:3-5)

God Almighty.

He is God Almighty.  He is Almighty God.  “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.  And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.” (Genesis 17:1-2) (See also: Genesis  28:3; B of M, 1 Nephi 17:48; D&C 20:21; 87:6; 88:106.)

God.

The Father is God.  The Son is God.  Jehovah is God of the whole earth contrary to the lying counter assertion made by Lucifer.  Jesus Christ is the only wise God our Savior. (Jude 1:25)  Jesus Christ by divine investiture represents God the Father–Jehovah in whose name we pray as compared with God the Father–Elohim who is the Heavenly Father of our spirits to whom we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.  Jesus Christ is God manifest in the flesh. (1 Timothy 3:16) (John 1:1; 20:28; Hebrews 1:8; Romans 9:5; 2 Peter 1:1; 1 John 5:20)

God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Jesus Christ, Jehovah, is “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”  (D&C 136:21-22; Exodus 3:1-16; Jesus The Christ, p. 36)

“It was he who representing the Father appeared to and covenanted with Abraham.  (Abraham 2:6-11)

God of Battles.

He is God of Battles.  “Anciently he commanded his people to engage in righteous wars (Exodus 23:27-33; 1 Samuel 15″2-4), and whenever they were so engaged, he was entreated of them and fought their battles.  (1 Chronicles 5:20; 2 Chronicles 20:15; 32:7-8) The whole Nephite history is one of the Lord giving frequent direction to them in their battles, whenever they sought such guidance in faith.  In the day of the Second Coming the promise is that he again will fight the battles of his saints, “as when he fought in the day of battle.”  (Zechariah 14:1-5; Ezekiel 38; 39; Zephania 3:8) Despite the false sensitivities of those who cannot conceive of the meek and lowly Nazarene as a Man of War (Exodus 15:3), yet, the inspired answer to the query: Who is the King of Glory? He, Jehovah Jesus Christ, the Holy Messiah, is “The Lord strong and mighty, and Lord mighty in battle.”  (Psalm 24:8) (MD p. 322)

God of Gods.

He is God of Gods.  “Every man who reigns in celestial glory is a god to his dominions,” the Prophet [Joseph Smith] said.  (Teachings, p. 374) Hence, the Father, who shall continue to all eternity as the God of exalted beings, is a God of Gods.  Further, as the Prophet also taught, there is “a God above the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 370, 373) In this way both the Father and the Son, as also all exalted beings are now or in due course will become Gods of Gods.  (Teachings, pp. 342-376)” (MD, pp. 322-323)

God of Hosts.

He is the God of Hosts.  See Lord of Hosts.

God of Israel.  God of Jacob.

He is God of Israel.  He is the God of Jacob.  “Christ is the God of Israel (1 Nephi 19:7-17; 3 Nephi 11:7-17),  the God of Jacob  (Psalm 146:5; Isaiah 2:3; D&C 136:21), the Lord God, the Mighty One of Israel (D&C 36:1), the Lord God of the Hebrews.  (Exodus 3:18) These names signify both that he came of Israel himself and also his personal, attentive care toward that chosen race.  They point to his “great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses.  (Isaiah 63:7-9; D&C 133:52-53)” (MD p. 323)

He is the God of Jacob.  (Psalm 146:5; Isaiah 2:3; D&C 136:21)

God of Jeshurin.

He is the God of Jeshurun.  “Christ is the God of Jeshurun (Deuteronomy 33:26), meaning that he is the God of Israel.  Jeshurun or Jesurun, translated as upright one, is used by Moses and Isaiah as a symbolical name for Israel. (Deuteronomy 32:15; 33:4-5; Isaiah 44:2) (MD p. 323)

God of Knowledge.

He is the God of Knowledge.  (1 Samuel 2:3)

God of Nature.

He is the God of Nature.  “Many who do not profess belief in God as he is revealed in the scriptures, or even as he is described in the false creeds of sectarianism, yet recognizing that law prevails in the universe and among all forms of life, speak of the manifestations of this law as the God of Nature.  In reality, Christ is the God of Nature (1 Nephi 19:12), for it is in and through his almighty power that all things are created, upheld, governed, and controlled.”  (MD p. 323)

God of Spirits.

He is the God of Spirits.  “Our Father in Heaven (Matthew 6:9) is the God of Spirits (Numbers 16:22; 27:16) or the Father of Spirits (Hebrews 12:9), meaning that he is the literal Parent of the Spirit Christ and of all other spirits.  Inasmuch, however, as Christ attained God-hood while yet in pre-existence, he too stood as a God to the other spirits, but this relationship was not the same one of personal parenthood that prevailed between the Father and his offspring.”  (MD, pp. 323-324)

God of Thy Fathers

He is God of Thy Fathers. “God of our fathers, we come unto thee. Children of those whom thy truth has made free. Grant us the joy of thy presence today; Never from thee let us stray!” (Hymn, God of Our Fathers, We Come unto Thee, Text: Charles W. Penrose; Music: Ebenezer Beesley.

God of the Whole Earth.

“Christ is God of the Whole Earth.  (Isaiah 54:5; 3 Nephi 11:14), an appelation he carries to bear record of his universal interest in all men and their salvation.  He is not alone the God of the Jews, or of Israel, or of the Latter-day Saints, but of the whole earth and all life on its face.”  (MD p. 324)

God of Truth.

“Christ is the God of Truth.  (Exodus 34:6; Deuteronomy 32:4; Psalm 31:5), meaning he is the embodiment and personification of truth.  In the same sense he is the God of grace, mercy, love, righteousness, charity, integrity, and all of the attributes of godliness.”  (MD p. 324)

God the Lord.

He is God the Lord.    See Lord God.

God’s anointed.

He is God the Father’s anointed Son with a divine mission to save the Father’s children.  (Acts 4:27)

God’s holy child Jesus.

He is God the Father’s holy child Jesus the Christ.  (Acts 4:27, 30)

Golden Rule.

He is the Golden Rule.  “All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.”  (Matthew 7:12; 3 Nephi 14:12) This perfect code for personal conduct, taken from out Lord’s sermon on the mount, is commonly referred to as the Golden Rule, a name which attempts to point up the transcendent wisdom of the counsel involved.  Sometimes the Golden Rule is paraphrased to say: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.”  (MD p. 326)

Good.

Christ is Good.  “All things which are good cometh of God…. That which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God.”  (Moroni 7:12-13) “O taste and see that the Lord is good.”  (Psalm 34:8)

Good Shepherd.

He is the Good shepherd and we the sheep of his fold. (John 10:11,14)  The Good shepherd looks after his lambs and his sheep, providing us with peace which passeth understanding.

Goodness.

He is Goodness, even the source of all of our Goodness (Exodus 34:6; Psalm 52:1; 2 Nephi 9:10; Mosiah 5:3) and we are eternally blessed if we but continue in that goodness. (D&C 86:11)

Gospel.  Gospel Good News.

He is the gospel.  He is the Gospel good news.  All gospel principles we love so dearly are embodied in Him.  “Literally, gospel means good tidings from God or God-story.  Thus it is the glad tidings or good news concerning Christ, his atonement, the establishment of his earthly kingdom, and a possible future inheritance in his celestial presence.  “And this is the gospel,” the Prophet recorded by way of revelation, “the glad tidings, which the voice out of the heavens bore record unto us – That he came into the world, even Jesus, to be crucified for the world, and to bear the sins of the world, and to sanctify the world, and to cleanse it from all unrighteousness; That through him all might be saved whom the Father had put into his power and made by him.”  (D&C 76:40-42)” (MD pp. 332-332)

Governor.  Governor Who Rules Israel.

He is the Governor who rules Israel (Matthew  2:6), giving us eternal law, administering both in justice and mercy.  “Christ is the Governor, the Ruler, the King, the One whose right it is to reign.  Micah prophesied that in Bethlehem would “he come forth” who was “to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”  (Micah 5:2) This prophecy as understood and quoted by the Jews was that out of Bethlehem “shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.”  (Matthew 2:6) When the government of God is perfected during the millennium, he shall indeed stand as Governor, and “Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end.”  He shall reign “upon the throne of David,” and shall order and establish his kingdom “with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever.”  (Isaiah 9:7)” (MD p. 338)

Grace.  Grace of God.  Amazing Grace.

He is Grace.  He is the Grace of God.  He is Amazing Grace. Like the Father, He is gracious to save.  He is the embodiment of all saving grace.  It is before His throne of grace at His feet that we humbly kneel.  (Hebrews 4:16)

“God’s grace consists in his love, mercy, and condescension toward his children.  All things that exist are manifestations of the grace of God.  The creation of the earth, life itself, the atonement of Christ, the plan of salvation, kingdoms of immortal glory hereafter, and the supreme gift of eternal life – all these things come by the grace of him whose we are.  Grace is granted to men proportionately as they conform to the standards of personal righteousness that are part of the gospel plan.  Thus the saints are commanded to “grow in grace” (D&C 50:40), until they are sanctified and justified, “through the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”  (D&C 20:30-32)

“Grace is an attribute of perfection possessed by Deity (D&C 66:12; 84:102), and Christ himself “received grace for grace” until finally he gained the fulness of the Father.  The same path to perfection is offered to man.  “If you keep my commandments,” the Lord says, “you shall receive of his fulness, and be glorified in me as I am in the Father; therefore, I say unto you, you shall receive grace for grace.”  (D&C 93:6020)” (MD, pp. 338-339)

Last and First, First and Last, He is Amazing Grace. Grace and Truth.

He is Grace and He is Truth.  He is The Only Begotten who is full of Grace and Truth: grace because he ascended from grace to grace, receiving grace for grace; truth because he is the source and light of all truth.  (Moses 1:6; John 1:17; Acts 15:11; D&C 88:6) By his grace and truth we may be perfect in Him.  (Moroni 10:32; D&C 93:36) He is Amazing Grace.

Gracious.

He is Gracious.  “Ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.”  (1 Peter 2:3)

Great God.

He is the Great God (Titus 2:10) of whom there is none like him except The Father.  Of Him we sing the powerful hymn, “How Great Thou Art.”(Hymns, p. 86)

Great High Priest.

He is the Great High Priest after the Holy Order of the Son of God.

“14. Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

“15. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

16. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

(Hebrews 4:14-16.)

Great I Am.

“Christ is the Great I AM, the I AM, the I AM THAT I AM, meaning that he is the Eternal One, the One “who is from all eternity to all eternity” (D&C 39:1); Exodus 3:14), the God who is “from everlasting to everlasting” (Psalm 90:2), whose course is one eternal round and who never varies or changes.  (1 Nephi 10:17-20) “From eternity to eternity he is the same, and his years never fail” (D&C 76:4), for he is the I AM.  When he said to the Jews, for instance, “Before Abraham was, I am” (John *:58), it was the same as saying “Before Abraham, was I AM, the Everlasting God, he ‘whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.’ ” (Micah 5:2)” (MD p. 340)

Great In Power.

He is “Slow to Anger and Great in Power.”

“2. God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.

“3. The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked; the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

“4. He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth.

“5. The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.

“6. Who can stand before his indignation? And who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.

“7. The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.

“8. But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.

“15. Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.

(Nahum 1:2-8, 15.)

Great Shepherd.

He is the Great Shepherd.  See Good Shepherd.

Great Spirit.

Christ is the Great Spirit.  “It is obvious that by this designation the Lamanites had in mind a personal being, for King Lamoni mistakenly supposed that Ammon was the Great Spirit.  (Alma 18:2-28; 19:25-27) Both Ammon and Aaron, using the same principle of [persuasion] applied by Paul on Mars Hill (Acts 17:22-31), taught that the Great Spirit was the God who created the heavens and the earth.  (Alma 18:8-29; 22:8011) This same Lamanite concept that God is the Great Spirit has existed among the Native American Indians in modern times.”  (MD p. 340)

Happiness and Joy.

He is the only true Happiness and He is the only true Joy.

Harmless.

He is Harmless.  He is the Great Physician whose singular objective is that of healing his children and of doing them no harm. (See Holy)

He that Liveth and was Dead.

He is He that Liveth and was Dead. See Resurrection.

Head of the Body. Head of the Church and Head of Every Man.

He is the Head of the Church.  (Ephesians 5:23) and head of every man. (1 Corinthians 11:3; Ephesians 4:15)

“Keep in mind that the head of this church is not the President of the Church. The head of this church is the Lord and Master, Jesus Christ, who reigns and rules. … In all this turmoil we can be sure that He is guiding the Church and all who confess Him as Lord and Master and Savior. And lest we forget:

“[Jesus] is the head of the body, the Church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” (Colossians 1:18.) It is true, however, that in each dispensation when his gospel has been upon the earth and his Church has been established, the Lord has appointed and has vested authority in one man at a time in each such dispensation who has borne the title of president of the Church, or prophet, seer and revelator to the Church. Such titles, or the conferring of such authority, does not make of one “the Head of the Church,” which title belongs to Jesus Christ. It does make of him, however, God’s mouthpiece and the one who acts in God’s stead and through whom he speaks to his people by way of instruction, to give or to withhold principles and ordinances, or to warn of judgments. …

“… The president of the Church is the keeper of the Lord’s House or Kingdom. Into his hands are committed the keys to every part.

(TP, Harold B. Lee, Chapter 9: Heeding the True Messenger of Jesus Christ, 78-87.)

He has passed into the Heavens. (Hebrews 4:14; 8:1; 9:24; 1 Peter 3:22) and in fact is made higher than the Heavens.  (Hebrews 7:26)  He has been to the depths.  He has been to and exceeds the heights and in His love He is singularly focused on saving us His brothers and sisters who are now His children — each bought with His most terrible price which he paid in Gethsemane and leading to and on Golgotha where He was crucified.

Head of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He is the Head of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  “To his earthly kingdom in the dispensation of the fulness of times the Lord has given the formal name, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (D&C 115:3-4) This Church is “the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth” (D&C 1:30), the only organization authorized by the Almighty to preach his gospel and administer the ordinance of salvation, the only Church which has power to save and exalt man in the hereafter.  Membership in this divine institution is a pearl of great price.”  (MD p. 136)

Head of the Church of the Firstborn

As the Firstborn, He is Head of the Church of the Firstborn.  The Church of the Firstborn is made up of the sons of God, those who have been born or adopted into the family of the Lord, those who are destined to be joint-heirs with Christ in receiving all that the Father hath.

“If you keep my commandments you shall receive of his fulness, and be glorified in me as I am in the Father; … And all those who are begotten through me are partakers of the glory of the same, and are the church of the Firstborn.”  (D&C 93:20-22; Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 2, pp. 9, 41- 43)” (MD pp. 139-140)

Healer. Master Healer.

“I express special gratitude to the Lord Jesus Christ. I am thankful for His loving-kindness and for His open invitation to come unto Him. I marvel at His matchless power to heal. I testify of Jesus Christ as the Master Healer. It is but one of many attributes that characterize His incomparable life. . . . As the Master Healer, Jesus directed His friends to “go . . . and tell . . . what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, [and] the dead are raised. The books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John repeatedly report that Jesus went about preaching the gospel and healing all types of sickness.” (CR, Russell M. Nelson, Jesus Christ – the Master Healer, October 2005.)

Heir of All Things.

He is Heir of All Things.  (Hebrews 1:2) He is Heir of the world, indeed Heir of worlds without number.  (Romans 4:13) And because of the love which He offers us so willingly He is also willing that we be made joint heirs with Him of all things. (Hebrews 1:14; 1 Peter 3:7; Mosiah 15:11; D&C 86:9; 137:7)

Heir of God The Father.

He is the Heir of God The Father.  “Christ is the Heir of God.  (Matthew 21:33-41; Mark 12:1-12; Luke 20:9-18; Romans 4:13-14; Hebrews 1:1-4) By virtue thereof he was entitled to inherit and he did inherit and receive all that the Father had.  He gained every endowment, quality, attribute, perfection, power, and possession, so that “in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”  (Colossians 2:9) He has received the “fulness of the glory of the Father.”  (D&C 93:4-20; Colossians 1:19) (MD p. 349)  And in His great condescension, mercy, and love, He makes us joint heirs.

Helper.

He is our Helper in spiritual and in temporal matters.  “Boldly say, the Lord is my helper.”  (Hebrews 13:6)

High Above All Nations.

He is High Above All Nations.  (Psalm 113:4)

High Priest.  High Priest of good things to come.  High Priest of Our Profession. After the order of Melchizedek; High Priest of The Holy Order After the Name of the Son of God.

“Christ is the great High Priest.”  (Teachings, p. 158; Hebrews 3:1)

“Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek,” are the words of one of the great Messianic prophecies.  (Psalm 110:4; Hebrews 5:5-11; 7:14-17) The designation of our Lord as the great High Priest points to his position as the chief minister of salvation, as the author of salvation in the sense of having worked out the infinite and eternal atonement. (Hebrews 2:1-18; 5) (MD p. 355)

He is the High priest of good things to come which same good things await us if we enter into that same order of the priesthood and endure to the end.  (Heb. 9:11; Alma 13; Heb. 3:1; 4:14; 10:21)

Him That Loved Us, And Washed Us From Our Sins In His Own Blood.

He is “Him That Loved Us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood” (Revelation 1:5) despite our many infirmities and imperfections.  We partake of the sacrament in remembrance of his cleansing blood in Gethsemane and broken body on Calvary.  (Revelation 1:5)

Holder of the Keys Of Salvation, Of The Kingdom, Of Death, Of Hell and Of The Resurrection.

He is Holder of the Keys of Salvation,  Holder of the Keys of The Kingdom, Holder of the Keys of Death, of Hell and of The Resurrection. “The keys of the kingdom – the right and power to govern the Lord’s affairs for and on his behalf – have been held by prophets [and apostles] in all ages, but when the Lord comes to reign personally upon the earth during the millennial era, he will take back the keys.  Those who have held them will make an accounting to him of their stewardships at the place called Adam-ondi-Ahman, at which gathering Christ will receive “dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him.”  (Daniel 7:13-14) Eventually in the celestial day, “the keys of the kingdom shall be delivered up again unto the Father.”  (Inspired Version, Luke 3:8) (MD p. 413)

Holy.  Holiness.  Harmless.  Undefiled.

He is Holy.  He is Holiness.  He is Harmless.  He is Undefiled (Hebrews. 7:26): holy because without sin; harmless because his every intent is to save; undefiled because though in the world he was not corrupted by the world.  “One of Christ’s names is Holy, using the designation in the noun sense and not as an adjective.  Thus Isaiah entoned: “Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy.”  (Isaiah 57:15) Obviously the purpose of the name is to convey to man the concept of the supreme holiness and perfection embodied in him who is the Son of Man of Holiness. (Moses 6:57) (MD p. 358)

Holy and True Having the Key of David.

He is Holy.  He is True.  He has the Key of David which includes the right and the power to rule over Israel. (Revelation 3:7)  He holds the keys which unlock the door of death and hell.   (Revelation 1:18)  He has the keys of eternal worlds and glories without number.  (Moses 1:33)

Holy Child.

He is the Holy Child Jesus. (Acts 4:27, 30; Moroni 8:3.)

Holy Ghost.

He is not the Holy Ghost.  “The Holy Ghost is The Third Member of the Godhead.  The Holy Ghost is a Personage of Spirit, a Spirit Person, a Spirit Man, a Spirit Entity, [a Spirit spirit Son of God] who can be in only one place at one time, and he does not and cannot transform himself into any other form or image than that of the Man whom he is, though his power and influence can be manifest at one and the same time through all immensity. (D&C 130:22-23; Teachings, p. 190, 275-276; Gospel Doctrine, 5th ed., pp. 59-62.)  The Holy Ghost is The Comforter, Testator, Revelator, Sanctifier, Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit of Promise, Spirit of Truth, Spirit of the Lord, and Messenger of the Father and the Son, and his companionship is the greatest gift that mortal man can enjoy.  The mission of The Holy Ghost is to perform all of the functions appertaining to the various name-titles which he bears.”  (MD pp. 358-359)

Holy Man.

Like His Father, He is The Holy Man, The Man of Holiness. (MD 29)

Holy Messiah.

He is the Holy Messiah.  “Christ is called by his name, the Holy Messiah, when the purpose is to bring to mind both his holy and perfected state and his position as Deliverer and King.  (2 Nephi 2:6,8) (MD p. 360)

Holy One. Holy One of God.  Holy One of Israel.  Holy One of Jacob.  Holy One of Zion. Holy One and the Just. He is the Holy One.  (Psalm 16:10) The Holy One of God.  The Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 1:4) The Holy One of Jacob.  The Holy One of Zion.  The Holy One and the Just. (Acts 3:14)

“Christ is the Holy One, a designation signifying that he is a holy, pure, sanctified Person, One who was and is without sin, who had no need for repentance, and who stands perfect in all things.  “I am the Lord, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.”  (Isaiah 43:15; 49:7; Psalm 16″10; Act5s 2:27; 3:14; 13:35; 2 Nephi 9:20, 41; 3 Nephi 26:5; Mormon 9:5, 14; D&C 78:16) “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.”  (Isaiah 6:3) “Holiness unto the Lord” will be emblazoned on useful items of every sort in that millennial day when the Holy One reigns personally upon the earth.  (Zechariah 14:20-21) “To couple the concept of Christ’s holiness with the pointed realization that he came forth from and is the Son of God, he is called the Holy One of God.  It was by this name that a devil addressed him, when that unclean spirit was commanded to leave his enforced tenancy in a stolen tabernacle.  (Mark 1:24; Luke 4:34)” “Christ is the Holy One of Israel, an appellation signifying that he is both the embodiment of holiness and the God of Israel who came into the world through the lineage of that chosen people.  This particular name was in constant and popular usage anciently.  It is found 40 times in the Book of Mormon and over 30 in the Old Testament, but it is not found of record in either the New Testament or the Doctrine and Covenants.  (2 Nephi 25:29; 30:2; Omni 26; Psalm 89:18; Isaiah 43:14: Ezekiel 39:7)” “References to Christ as the Holy One of Jacob have substantially the same meaning as those which designate him as the Holy One of Israel.  (Isaiah 29:23; 2 Nephi 27:34) They invite attention to our Lord’s holiness and his position as the God of Jacob [Israel], a God who was born in the flesh as the literal descendant of that ancient patriarch.”

“To speak of Christ as the Holy One of Zion is to point attention both to his holiness and to the especial and personal relationship that exists between him and his Zion.  (D&C 78:15) When the perfect Zion – composed solely of the pure in heart (D&C 97:21) – is again established on earth, then the presence of the Lord will be felt there as his presence was found in the ancient city of that name. (Moses 7:16-19, 62-64)” (MD pp. 360-361)

Honesty, Honor and Integrity.

He is perfect Honesty.  He is perfect Honor.  He is perfect Integrity.

And “All men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father.  He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.”  (John 5:23) From eternity to mortality to all eternity He is to be honored because His Integrity is unimpeacheable.

Hope.  Hope of Israel.  He is perfect Hope.

He is Our Hope — which is and must always center in Christ.  (Psalm 31:24; 42:5. 11; 43:5; 146:5) He is the Hope of Israel.  “The triumph and hope of Israel is yet future.  In part it will be realized during the millennial era, but the final inheritance, the fulfillment of the hope in the eternal sense, will come after this earth becomes a celestial sphere, for in that day “the poor and the meek of the earth shall inherit it.”  (D&C 88:17)” (MD pp. 367-368)

Hope of Our Glory.

He is the Hope of our glory. (Colossians 1:27) Prior to our birth into mortality we set our pre-existent glory by for a little season.  When we prove faithful we shall return with honor to heaven, there to reclaim our robe of righteousness and the glory that we did earn before and then we will have glory added upon our heads forever and ever.

Horn of Salvation.

He is the Horn of Salvation. “The “horn” is a metaphor commonly employed in the Old Testament for strength (see 1 Samuel 2:10; Psalm 92:10; Jeremiah 48:25; Daniel 7:7; Micah 4:13). As indicated in Psalm 18:2 … “horn of salvation” means something like “a mighty Savior.”” (Luke 1:69.)

How Great Thou Art.

“O Lord my god, When I in awesome wonder,

Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;

I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,

Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

“When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,

And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.

When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur

And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.

“Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

“And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;

Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;

That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,

He bled and died to take away my sin.

“Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

“When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,

And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.

Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,

And then proclaim, My God, how great Thou art!;

“Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Hymn 86, Lyrics by Stuart K. Hine.

Humility.

He is Humility having suffered the will of The Father in all things.  “All progress in spiritual things is conditioned upon the prior attainment of humility.  Pride, conceit, haughtiness, and vainglory are of the world and stand as a bar to the receipt of spiritual gifts.  We are commanded to be humble.  (D&C 105:23; 112:10; 124:97, 103; James 4:6, 10)

“Always retain in remembrance the greatness of God, and your own nothingness, and his goodness and long-suffering towards you, unworthy creatures,” King Benjamin taught, “and humble yourselves even in the depths of humility, calling on the name of the Lord daily, and standing steadfastly in the faith.”  (Mosiah 4:11)” (MD p. 370)

Husband.

He is the Husband.  “Christ (the Bridegroom) shall claim his bride (the Church), celebrate the marriage supper, and become the Husband of his wife.  (Isaiah 54:5; Jeremiah 31:32; Ephesians 5:23; Revelation 19:7-9; 21:2) As a Husband he shall deal intimately, with tenderness and compassion, toward the remnant of his people who have returned to enjoy millennial rest with him.”  (MD p. 37)

Husbandman.

“His Father is the Husbandman.  Christ is the True Vine.

His prophets are the branches, and the fruit which the branches bear is eternal life for the souls of men.  (John 15:1-8) Thus without The Father there would be no Christ, without Christ there would be no prophets, without prophets there would be no fruit of eternal life.”  (MD p. 810)

I Am.  I Am That I Am.

He is I Am.  He is I Am That I Am who called and sent Moses and Aaron.  He is Jehovah who brought our forefathers up out of Egypt.  He is the self-existent being.  (Revelation 1:13-17) “I am he that liveth, and was dead.” (Revelation 1:18) “I am alive forever more, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”  (Revelation 1:18) (Jesus The Christ, p. 36) See Great I Am.

Image of God the Father.

He is the exact Image of God the Father’s body. (2 Corinthians 4:4) He is the express Image of God the Father’s personality.  (Hebrews 1:3)

Immanent God.

Christ is the Immanent God.  He is the indwelling Presence in all immensity.  “In him we live, and move, and have our being.”  (Acts 17:28) “He is above all things, and in all things, and is through all things, and is round about all things; and all things are by him, and of him, even God, forever and ever.”  (D&C 88:41)

Immanuel.

He is Immanuel, a variant spelling of Emmanuel, which means the Messiah.  “Christ is Immanuel, Emmanuel, the King Immanuel (D&C 128:22), signifying literally, God is with us.  This designation, used by Isaiah in a great Messianic prophecy (Isaiah 7:14), alluded to by Micah as referring to the birth of our Lord (Micah 5:3), and specifically named by Matthew as having reference to the Virgin Birth (Matthew 1:18-25), signifies that Christ as God would be born into mortality of a virgin and would be with men to save and redeem them.”  (MD p. 376)

In All, Above All, Through All, Round About All.

He is In all things, above all things, through all things, and round about all things.  “He is above all things, and in all things, and is through all things, and is round about all things; and all things are by him, and of him, even God, forever and ever.”  (D&C 88:41)

In Him we live, and move, and have our being.”  (Acts 17:28)

Incarnate God.

“Christ is the Incarnate God.  That is, he is the Lord Omnipotent, a God “from all eternity to all eternity,” and yet he condescended and came down from heaven into mortality where He dwelt “in a tabernacle of clay.”  (Mosiah 3:5) Though he had attained Godhood, yet he was thereafter invested with flesh and took upon himself the bodily nature and form of a mortal man.  (Mosiah 15)  “I was in the world and made flesh my tabernacle, and dwelt among the sons of men,” he said.  (D&C 93:5; John 1:1-5, 14)” (MD p. 378)

Incorruption.

Christ is Incorruption.  “As used in the scriptures, incorruption is descriptive of the status of physical perfection enjoyed by immortal beings.  Mortal bodies are corruptible, they are subject to change and decay, eventually deteriorating and going back to the mortal element from which they were created.  Thus in the resurrection they will be raised from an earthly state of corruption to a heavenly state of incorruption.  Disease, pain, decay, and physical deformity will all vanish away.  (2 Nephi 9:7; Mosiah 16:10; Alma 40:2; 41:4; 1 Corinthians 15:42-54)” (MD p. 378) He was and is triumphant over all entropy – all decay and descent into disorder, evil and corruption.  Only through Christ may we achieve incorruptibility.

Independence.

He is Independence.  In the Universe, He stands Independent of all creatures excepting The Father.

Indignation.

Christ is Indignation.  “Righteous indignation is an attribute of Deity.  It consists in a deep, intense, and righteous anger aroused by the mean, shameful, petty, and wicked acts of men.  For instance: “It shall come to pass, because of the wickedness of the world, that I will take vengeance upon the wicked, for they will not repent; for the cup of mine indignation is full.”  (D&C 29:17; 35:14; 43:26; 56:1; 87:6; 88:88; 97:24; 101:10-11; 109:52; 124:52) Indignation is poured out as a result of wickedness (D&C 124:48); it is avoided when men keep the commandments.  (D&C 98:22, 47)” (MD p. 379)

Industriousness.

He is Industriousness.  See Work.

Infinite God.

He is the Infinite God.  See Omnipotence.

Initiative.

He is Initiative, having “the self-reliance and energy to undertake new enterprises and to do the work ahead …”  (MD p. 381)  Nevertheless and notwithstanding, He is subject to His Father.

Innocence.

He is Innocence.  He is that state of purity and freedom from sin which men must possess to gain salvation and exaltation in the kingdom of God.  (Alma 11:37)

Insight.

He is Insight.  See Discernment.

Integrity.

Christ is Integrity.  “The complete development of man’s moral character in conformity with principles of justice and uprightness is termed integrity.  A man of integrity is sound, incorruptible, and particularly strict about fulfilling the trusts reposed in him by others.  The highest manifestation of integrity is exhibited by those who conform their conduct to the terms of those gospel covenants and promises which they have made.  Integrity goes hand in hand with uprightness and righteousness, and the Lord loves those who have integrity of heart.  (D&C 124:15, 20)” (MD p. 385)

Intelligence.

He is perfect Intelligence.  “In the gospel sense, intelligence is far more than the capacity to know and understand, and the intelligent man is one who does more than acquire knowledge.  “The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth,” the Lord says.  “Light and truth forsake that evil one.”  (D&C 93:36-37) Thus intelligence is the light and truth which comes from Christ who is the way, the life, the light, and the truth of the world.”  (MD p. 386) The intelligent man of light and truth puts off the natural man to become a purified sanctified saint in Christ Jesus.

Intercessor.  Intercession.

He is the great Intercessor, living to make intercession for us with The Father. (Hebrews 7:25)   “Christ is the great Intercessor, the One who intercedes and mediates between God and men.  His advocacy, prayers, petitions, and entreaties are made for all men and especially for those who love and serve him.  (John 17; 3 Nephi 19)” (MD p. 388)

Iesous. Greek. Jesus is the Latin form of the Greek Iesous.

Is

He Is.  He Is all that is good.  He Is all that is remarkable.  He Is all that is perfect.  He Is the perfect presentation of His Father to us.  No superlative is satisfactory in describing the infinite, wonderful person that He Is.  In knowing the Savior we come to know The Father for in His life and person He revealeth The Father to us.  “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.  If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father Also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.  Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.  Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?  Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.”  (John 14:6-10)

JAH.  JAHWEH.

He is JAH or JAHWEH.  “Jah (Hebrew Yah) is a contracted form of Jehovah, Jahveh, or Yahweh – all of which names have reference to Christ, the God of Israel.  “Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him.” (Psalm 68:4) In a number of Old Testament passages use of the name Jah to designate Jehovah, who is Christ (D&C 110:1-10), have been translated Lord.  (Exodus 15:2; 17:16; 89:8; Isaiah 38:11)   See YAHWEH.”  (MD p. 391)

Jason. He is Jason, the Greek analogon of Jesus. (Acts 17:5-9; Romans 16:21)

Jealous.  Jealous God.

He is Jealous.  “To keep ever before his people the exacting and exclusive devotion which he requires of them, and acting on the principle of personification, our Lord uses the word Jealous as one of his names.  “For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”  (Exodus 34:14) Among other things, use of this name is a complete refutation of the sectarian heresy (found in the creeds) that Deity is devoid of passions.  (Exodus 20:5; Deuteronomy 4:24; 6:9; 7:15; Joshua 24:19)” (MD p. 391)

Jehovah. (Isaiah 26:4)

He is Jehovah.  “The covenant or proper name of the God of Israel.  It denotes the “Unchangeable One,” “the eternal I AM” (Ex. 6:3; Psalm 83: 18; Isaiah 12:2; 26:4).  The original pronunciation of this name has possibly been lost, as the Jews, in reading, never mentioned it, but substituted one of the other names of God, usually Adonai.  Probably it was pronounced Jahveh, or Yahveh.  In the KJV, the Jewish custom has been followed, and the name is generally denoted by LORD or GOD, printed in small capitals.  Jehovah is the premortal Jesus Christ and came to earth being born of Mary (see Mosiah 13: 28; 15:1; 3 Nephi 15: 1-5; D&C 110:1-10).  Although Exodus 6:3 states that the God of Israel was not known by the name Jehovah before Moses’ time, latter-day revelation tells us otherwise (Abraham 1:16; 2:8; cf. JST Exodus 6:3; see also Genesis 22:14)” (Bible Dictionary, p. 711.)

“Christ is Jehovah; they are one and the same Person.  The word Jehovah itself is the anglicized form of the Hebrew Yahweh, which refers to the God of Israel.  To Abraham the Lord said: “I am the Lord thy God, … My name is Jehovah.”  (Abraham 2:7-8)   Later he revealed himself to Moses and others by the same name.  (Inspired Version, Exodus 6:3; Psalm 83:18; Isaiah 12:2) In general, in the King James version of the Bible, the name Jehovah has been translated Lord.

“The death and resurrection of Jehovah (and the consequent resurrection of all men) is foretold in Isaiah in these words: “In the Lord JEHOVAH is everlasting strength. … Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise.  Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead. … The earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.”  (Isaiah 26:3, 19, 21)

“In this dispensation Christ appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery under his name Jehovah and accepted the Kirtland Temple as a house of the Lord.  In this revealed account his appearance is described in detail.  (D&C 110:1-10) It is interesting to note that comparable detailed descriptions were given of the appearance of the God of Israel to Moses and the elders of Israel (Exodus 24:9-10). And of the appearance of Christ to John the Revelator. (Revelation 1:13-18)” (MD p. 392)

Jeshua. Hebrew. Joshua or Jehoshua – meaning Jehovah is salvation.

Jesus. Jesus Christ.

He is Jesus.  Jesus of Galilee (Matthew 26:69); Jesus Christ; Jesus of  Nazareth (John 1:45; 18:5,7; 19:19; Acts 2:22; 3:6; 4:10; 6:14; 10:38; 22:8; 26:9; Matthew 26:71; Mark 1:24; 10:47; 14:67; 16:6; Luke 4:34; 18:37; 24:19); His name Jesus was and is sacred to us forevermore.

“Taken from the Hebrew Yeshua, Jesus is a masculine personal name meaning Jehovah is salvation or deliverance; and accordingly, with supreme propriety, it was chosen and revealed as the personal name of our Lord.  (Luke 1:31) This name – also found as Jeshua, Johshua, and Jehoshua – apparently was a common one among the ancient Jews.  Variants of the name include Hosea, Hoshea, and Oshea – all meaning deliverance.

“Though it was a common name anciently, its use by the Lord God Omnipotent as his personal name has given it a sacred connotation for all succeeding generations.  (Acts 2:36) Accordingly its profane and repetitious use is not in keeping with the true spirit of reverence and worship.”  (MD p. 392)

Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus of Galilee.

He is Jesus of Nazareth.  He is Jesus of Galilee. He is THE MAN FROM GALILEE. “Because he lived in Nazareth of Galilee, Christ was referred to by friend and foe alike as Jesus of Nazareth.  (Matthew 21:11; Mark 1:24; Luke 18:37; 24:19; Acts 3:6)” (MD p. 392)

JHVH.  JHWH.

He is the Tetragrammaton, the four Hebrew letters transliterated YHWH or JHVH that form a biblical proper name of God compared to YAHWEH.  He is Jehovah.

Joseph’s Son. Joseph’s Adopted Son.

He is Joseph’s adopted son and He was dutifully subject to His step father and mother Mary.  (Luke 4:22; John 1:45; 6:42)

Joshua.  Yehoshua.  Yeshua.

He is Joshua.  “Jesus is the individual name of the Savior, and as thus spelled is of Greek derivation; its Hebrew equivalent was Yehoshua or Yeshua, or, as we render it in English, Joshua.  In the original the name was well understood as meaning “Help of Jehovah,” or “Savior.”  Though as common an appellation as John or Henry or Charles today, the name was nevertheless divinely prescribed, …  Thus, unto Joseph, the espoused husband of the Virgin, the angel said, “And thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”  (Jesus The Christ, p. 35)

Joy.  Joy to the World.

He is Joy.  He is the Joy to the World of which the holy angels sang.  “Obtaining exaltation consists in gaining a fulness of joy; it is to enter into the joy of the Lord.  (D&C 51:19) The saints are to “reap eternal joy” for all their sufferings (D&C 109:76), though their joy is not to be full in this life.  (D&C 101:36) A fulness of joy is found only among resurrected exalted beings.  (D&C 93:33) “Those who have died in Jesus Christ may expect to enter into all that fruition of joy when they come forth, which they possessed or anticipated here.”  (Teachings, p. 295) Christ himself endured all things, including the cross, “for the joy that was set before him: (Hebrews 12:2), and he has obtained a fulness of joy.  (3 Nephi 17:20; 28:10)” (MD p. 397)  Only in and through Christ do we receive a fulness of joy.

Judge.  Judge in Israel.  Righteous Judge.

He is the Judge.  Judge of all mankind.  The righteous Judge. (2 Timothy 4:8)  Ready to Judge the quick (the mortally living) and the dead (those who have passed through mortality into eternal life beyond). (1 Peter 4:5) And he shall Judge each of us fairly and with as much mercy as possible, whether we are among the quick or the dead (2 Timothy 4:1; Acts 10:42), for all Judgment is His, having been given Him by The Father. If we have repented, He promises that He will remember our sins no more.

Judge.  Judge of All the Earth.  Judgment.  Judgment Day.   He is The Judge.  Christ is Judge of All the Earth.  He is Judgment.  He is Judgment Day.   “For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son.”  (John 5:22; Psalm 50:6; Acts 10:42)  He is Judgment and His judgment is administered with perfect justice (Isaiah 9:7); for “with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth.”  (Isaiah 11:4) “As I hear, I judge,” he said, “and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.”  (John 5:30) In the coming day of judgment, when He whose judgment is just judges, perfect justice will be administered to all men.  “Shall not the judge of all the earth do right?”  (Genesis 18:25; Psalm 94:1-2)” (MD p. 398) He is Judgment Day to every man and woman – weighing in the balance the desires, thoughts, actions, and circumstances of each man or woman.

“Judgment consists in the power to arrive at a wise and righteous decision and in the execution of that decision, to the blessing of the righteous and the condemnation of the wicked.  Judgment is an attribute of Deity.  “The Lord is a God of judgment.”  (Isaiah 30:18) “The Lord shall endure for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment. …  The Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth.”  (Psalm 9:7, 16) “Righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.”  (Psalm 97:2) “He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.”  (Deuteronomy 32:4)” (MD pp. 400-401)

Judge of the living and the dead. (Acts 10:42)

He is the Judge of Quick and Dead.

Just One, The

He is The Just One. (Acts 7:52)

Justice.  Just One.

He is Justice.  He is the Just One. (Acts 7:52; 22:14) Perfect Justice coupled with perfect Mercy is His alone.

Justification. Justifier.

He is Justification.  He is Our Justifier. “We know that justification through the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is just and true.”  (D&C 20:30)

“What then is the law of justification?  It is simply this: “All covenants, contracts, bonds, obligations, oaths, vows, performances, connections, associations, or expectations” (D&C 132:7), in which men must abide to be saved and exalted, must be entered into and performed in righteousness so that the Holy Spirit can justify the candidate for salvation in what has been done.  (1 Nephi 16:2; Jacob 2:13-14; Alma 41:14; D&C 98; 132:1, 62) An act that is justified by the Spirit is one that is sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise, or in other words, ratified and approved by the Holy Ghost.

“The law of justification is the provision the Lord has placed in the gospel to assure that no unrighteous performance will be binding on earth and in heaven, and that no person will add to his position or glory in the hereafter by gaining an unearned blessing.”

“As with all other doctrines of salvation, justification is available because of the atoning sacrifice of Christ, but it becomes operative in the life of an individual only on conditions of personal righteousness.”  (Isaiah 53:11; Mosiah 14:11)” (MD p. 408)

Just One.

“Christ is the Just One (Acts 3:14), signifying that perfect justice, equity, judgment, and impartiality are embodied in his person.”

(MD pp. 408-409)

Keeper of the Gate.

“Christ is the Keeper of the Gate.  He it is who shall admit men into the presence of the Father.  (D&C 132:12) He opens the gate to the righteous and bars it to the wicked.  Sectarian traditions placing Peter or anyone else as guardian of the pearly gates are false, for Christ “employeth no servant there; and there is none other way save it be by the gate; for he cannot be deceived, for the Lord God is his name.”  (2 Nephi 9:41-43)” (MD p. 409)

Key of David.  Keys.  Keys of Salvation.  Keys of the Kingdom.  Keys of the Ministering of Angels.  Keys of the Priesthood.  Though He is not the Key of David, He holds the Key of David.  “These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth.”  (Revelation 3:7) Thus, the key of David is the absolute power resident in Christ whereby his will is expressed in all things both temporal and spiritual.”  (MD p. 409) Though He is not the Keys or the Keys of Salvation or the Keys of the Kingdom or the Keys of the Ministering of Angels or the Keys of the Priesthood, He holds all Keys under the Father and delegates the use thereof to whom He will.

“President Joseph F. Smith said: “What is a key?  It is the right or privilege which belongs to and comes with the priesthood to have communication with God. … It is the right to enjoy the blessing of communication with the heavens, and the privilege and authority to administer in the ordinances of the gospel of Jesus Christ, to preach the gospel of repentance, and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins.  That is a key.”  (MD p. 410)

Knowledge.

He is omniscient. He is perfect Knowledge.  “Knowledge is an attribute of Deity and is possessed by him in its fulness.  “Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.”  (Acts 15:18)  An understanding that God [is omniscient and] knows all things, and that there is nothing which he does not know, is essentially necessary for man to have in order to exercise faith and gain salvation.

“Without the knowledge of all things God would not be able to save any portion of his creatures; for it is by reason of the knowledge which he has of all things, from the beginning to the end, that enables him to give that understanding to his creatures by which they are made partakers of eternal life; and if it were not for the idea existing in the minds of men that God had all knowledge it would be impossible for them to exercise faith in him.”  (Lectures on Faith, p. 44.  Not only does the Father know all things, but so like-wise does the Son  (D&C 38:2; 93:26), and the Holy Ghost. (D&C 35:19; 42:17) The process of gaining exaltation consists in growing in knowledge until a state of godhood is reached. … All types of knowledge however are not of equal worth, all do not reward the acquirer with equal progress toward exaltation.  Knowledge of the arts and sciences – of mathematics, chemistry, history, medicine, and the like – have no direct and immediate bearing on the attainment of salvation.  Of themselves they do not prepare a man for or lead him to a celestial inheritance, … But it is the knowledge of God and his laws that leads to high reward in the hereafter.  (2 Nephi 9:28-29, 42) … It is the knowledge of God that brings salvation. “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”  (John 17:3; D&C 93:6-28; 132:24).  When the Prophet said, “A man is saved no faster than he gets knowledge,” he had reference not to the worldly knowledge flowing from research, but to the eternal knowledge coming by revelation, “for it needs revelation to assist us,” he continued, “and give us knowledge of the things of God.”  (Teachings, p. 217) Similarly, when he said, “It is impossible for a man to be saved in ignorance” (D&C 131:6), he meant there could be no salvation in ignorance of Jesus Christ and the saving principles of the gospel.  “The principle of knowledge is the principle of salvation,” he said on another occasion.

“This principle can be comprehended by the faithful and diligent; and every one that does not obtain knowledge sufficient to be saved will be condemned.  The principle of salvation is given through the knowledge of Jesus Christ.”  (Teachings, p. 297) … All men who gain exaltation eventually arrive at the status where they have all truth and know all things.  (D&C 93:26-28) But this is not gained in a moment; it is a long process of advancement and education.  “We consider that God has created man with a mind capable of instruction, and a faculty which may be enlarged in proportion to the heed and diligence given to the light communicated from heaven to the intellect,” Joseph Smith said, “and that the nearer man approaches perfection, the clearer are his views, and the greater his enjoyments, till he has overcome the evils of his life and lost every desire for sin; and like the ancients, arrives at that point of faith where he is wrapped in the power and glory of his Maker and is caught up to dwell with him.  But we consider that this is a station to which no man ever arrived in a moment: he must have been instructed in the government and laws of that kingdom by proper degrees, until his mind is capable in some measure of comprehending the propriety, justice, equality, and consistency of the same.”  (Teachings, p. 51)” (MD pp. 425-528)

From text by Mary Ann Baker, ca. 1831-1921. Music: H.R. Palmer, 1834-1907: Master the tempest is raging.

Master, the tempest is raging!

Verse 1. The billows are tossing high!

The sky is o’ershadowed with blackness.

No shelter or help is nigh.

Carest thou not that we perish?

How canst thou lie asleep

When each moment so madly is threat’ning

A grave in the angry deep?

Verse 2. Master, with anguish of spirit

I bow in my grief today.

The depths of my sad heart are troubled.

Oh, waken and save, I pray!

Torrents of sin and of anguish

Sweep o’er my sinking soul,

And I perish! I perish! Dear Master.

Oh, hasten and take control!

Verse 3. Master, the terror is over.

The elements sweetly rest.

Earth’s sun in the calm lake is mirrored,

And heaven’s within my breast.

Linger, O blessed Redeemer!

Leave me alone no more

And with joy I shall make the blest harbor

And rest on the blissful shore.

Chorus. The winds and the waves shall obey thy will:

Peace, be still.

Whether the wrath of the storm-tosed sea

Or demons or men or whatever it be,

No waters can swallow the ship where lies

The Master of ocean and earth and skies.

They all shall sweetly obey thy will:

Peace, be still; peace, be still.

They all shall sweetly obey thy will:

Peace, peace, be still.

Mediation.  Mediator.  Mediator of The New Testament.  Mediator of the New Covenant.

He is the Mediator of the New Testament (Hebrews 9:15); Mediator between God the Father and men (1 Timothy 2:5); Mediator between justice and mercy;  Mediator of the better new and everlasting covenant. (Hebrews 8:6; 12:24)

Messenger of the Covenant.

He is the Messenger of the covenant with Israel. (Malachi 3:1) And we should love and keep sacred our baptismal, priesthood and temple covenants.  “Our Lord is the Messenger of the Covenant.  (Malachi 3:1) He came in his Father’s name (John 5:43), bearing his Father’s message (John 7:16-17), to fulfil the covenant of the Father that a Redeemer and Savior would be provided for men.  (Moses 4:1-3; Abraham 3:27-28).  Also, through his ministry the terms of the everlasting covenant of salvation became operative; the message he taught was that salvation comes through the gospel covenant.”

(MD p. 488)

Messenger of Salvation.

“Christ is the Messenger of Salvation, meaning that he was sent by His Father to bring salvation to men by working out the infinite and eternal atonement.  (3 Nephi 27:13-22)

Messiah.  Messias.

He is the Messiah, the anointed one. (Dan. 9:25) He is the Messias, the King and Deliverer, whose coming the Jews eagerly expected.. (John 1:41; 4:25) Messiah is fairer than the children of men.  Messiah is anointed with the oil of gladness above his fellows.  Messiah is blessed forever.  Messiah is remembered in all generations.  (Psalm 45) “Only the faithful were able [and are able] to see in Jesus of Nazareth the true Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53.”  (Bible Dictionary, 731.)  “There is only one Messiah (2 Nephi 25:18), and his status as the Anointed One, the promised Savior, is what constitutes his Messiahship.  Others do not and cannot attain a status of Messiahship (for they are not born, as Christ was, inheriting life in themselves from an Immortal Parent), though others may become joint-heirs with him in his Father’s kingdom.”  (MD p. 489)

Mighty Fortress: My Strength.  My Rock.  My Deliverer.  My Buckler.  My Horn of my Salvation.  My High Tower.

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Text by Martin Luther.

A mighty fortress is our God,

A tower of strength ne’er failing.

A helper mighty is our God,

O’er ills of life prevailing.

He overcometh all.

He saveth from the Fall.

His might and pow’r are great.

He all things did create.

And he shall reign for evermore.

Mighty God. (Isaiah 9:6) Mighty One. (Isaiah 60:16)

Mighty One of Israel.  Mighty One of Jacob.

Minister.  Minister of Salvation.

He is Minister of the circumcision for the truth of God (Rom. 15:8); He is Minister of the [temple] sanctuary and of the true tabernacle. (Heb. 8:2) Through history, we find him ministering in the tabernacle and in the temple. He ministers in the heavens. He will yet minister on earth during His millennial reign.

Morning Star.

He is the Morning Star. (Revelation 22:16)

Most High.  Most High God.

He is The Most High.  He is The Most High God.  “Both the Father and the Son bear the name the Most High.  (Deuteronomy 32:8-9; Isaiah 14:14; Mark 5:7; D&C 36:3; 39:19; 76:57) This designation connotes a state of supreme exaltation in rank, power, and dignity; it indicates that each of these Gods is God above all.  Obviously the Father is the Most High God in the literal sense for he is the God of the Son as well as the God of all men.  (John 20:17) The Son, however, is the Most High God in the sense that by divine investiture of authority, he is endowed with the power and authority of the Father, speaks in his name as though he were the Father, and therefore (having the fullness of the Father) He thinks it “not robbery to be equal with God.” (Philippians 2:6)” (MD p. 516)

My Helper.

The Lord is My Helper.  (Hebrews 13:6)

Name and Names of Christ.

“Jesus Christ is the name given of the Father whereby salvation [and exaltation] and all things incident thereto may be attained.  (Acts 4:12; Mosiah 3:17.)  It is that name the saints take upon them in the waters of baptism (D&C 18:21-25; 20:37); the name by which they are called (Alma 5:37-38; 3 Nephi 27:3-10), in which they worship (D&C 20:29), and which they use to seal their prayers (D&C 50:31); it is the name in which [all] saints [and angels] serve God (D&C 59:5), work miracles (D&C 84:66-73), speak prophecies (D&C 130:12), and do all things [to further the work of the Father and the Son in bringing to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.]  (D&C 46:31)

“Use of the name of Christ centers one’s faith in him and constitutes a solemn affirmation as to where all power and authority lies.  For God the Father “hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”  (Philippians 2:9-11)” (MD pp. 525-526)

New and Everlasting Covenant.  New and Everlasting Covenant of Marriage.  New Covenant.

He is the New and Everlasting Covenant.  He is the New and Everlasting Covenant of Marriage.  He is The New Covenant.  Through Jeremiah the Lord promised to “make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah,” a covenant which would lead to that glorious millennial condition in which “they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me,

from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord.”  (Jeremiah 31:31-34) Ezekiel said that this would be “an everlasting covenant with them,” one that would be made in the day when the Lord set his sanctuary (temple) “in the midst of them.”  (Ezekiel 37:26)

“Apostasy consists in breaking the everlasting covenant. (D&C 1:15) Isaiah said the universal apostasy would come because men had “transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.”  (Isaiah 24:5) Those who break their covenants are condemned more severely than they would have been had they never made the initial contract with the Lord.  (D&C 41:1; 82:2; 132:27) In covenant-keeping there is salvation; in covenant-breaking, damnation.  (D&C 76:101; 132:5, 15-27)” (MD pp. 529-530)  Christ is the embodiment of the New and Everlasting Covenant including The New and Everlasting Covenant  of Marriage.

(1 Corinthians 1:24) “Christ is the Lord Omnipotent (Mosiah 3:5, 17-18, 21; 5:2, 15; Revelation 19:6), meaning that as Lord of all he has all power.”  (MD p. 452) Christ is the Lord Omnisicent. Christ is the Lord Omnipotent.

Omnipresent, Omnipresence.

He is Omnipresent.  He is Omnipresence.  “God is omnipresent (Lectures on Faith, p. 9); he is the Immanent God, the indwelling Presence in all immensity.  “In him we live, and move, and have our being.”  (Acts 17:28) “He is above all things, and in all things, and is through all things, and is round about all things; and all things are by him, and of him, even God, forever and ever.”  (D&C 88:41)

“It is by reference to this true doctrine of omnipresence that the sectarian world attempts to justify its false creeds which describe Deity as a vague, ethereal, immaterial essence which fills the immensity of space and is everywhere and nowhere in particular present.

“God himself, of course, is a personal Being in whose image man is created.  (Genesis 1:26; 5:1; Moses 2:26; 6:9), but he is also an immanent Being, meaning that the light of Christ shines forth from him to fill all space.  This “light proceedeth forth from the presence of God to fill the immensity of space – The light which is in all things, which giveth life to all things, which is the law by which all things are governed, even the power of God who sitteth upon his throne, who is in the bosom of eternity, who is in the midst of all things.”  (D&C 88:12-13)

“God is the Creator; the power, light, influence, and spirit that goes forth from his person to fill all immensity is creature of his creating.  Thus it was that Paul, speaking of apostate peoples, said they had “changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever.”  (Romans 1:25)” (MD pp. 544-545)

“It is not because the Lord is ignorant of law and truth that he is able to progress, but because of his knowledge and wisdom,” President Joseph Fielding Smith wrote.  “The Lord is constantly using his knowledge in his work.  And his great work is in bringing to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.  By the creation of worlds and peopling them, by building and extending, he progresses, but not because the fulness of truth is not understood by him.”  (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, p. 10; D&C 84:38; 93:16-17; Matthew 28:18; Moroni 7:22)

“Joseph Smith said: “Without the knowledge of all things God would not be able to save any portion of his creatures; … and if it were not for the idea existing in the minds of men that God had all knowledge it would be impossible for them to exercise faith in him.”  (Lectures on Faith, p. 44)

“It was there [in Gethsemane] that he trembled because of pain, bled at every pore, and suffered both in body and in spirit and would that he “might not drink the bitter cup.”  (D&C 19:15-19; Mosiah 3:7) It was there he underwent his greatest suffering for men, taking upon himself, as he did, their sins on conditions of repentance. Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: 6. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had not pleasure. 7. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me) to do thy will, O God. 8. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; 9. Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. 10. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11. And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: 12. But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; 13. From henceforth expecting till his enemies he made his footstool. 14. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. 15. Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, 16. This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; 17. And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. 18. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. 19. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus. 20. By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; 21. And having an high priest over the house of God; 22. Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 23. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering: (for he is faithful that promised;) 24. And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25. Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. 26. For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27. But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. 28. He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29. Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? 30. (Genesis 49:10) “The name as found in Genesis 49:10 has been regarded by many biblical scholars as a prophecy of the coming of Messiah.  This interpretation is confirmed by the Joseph Smith Translation 50:24, and was fulfilled in Jesus Christ’s being literally of the lineage of David so as to be the heir to the throne of David.  “Shiloh” can be read as a short form for “He to whom it belongs”; for such a phrase referring to the Messiah, see Ezekiel 21:27.”  (Bible Dictionary, p. 773)

A FINEST STATEMENT ABOUT HIS ROLE AS THE LIVING CHRIST IS BY THE FIRST PRESIDENCY AND THE QUORUM OF THE TWELVE APOSTLES OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS:

“As we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ two millennia ago, we offer our testimony of the reality of His matchless life and the infinite virtue of His great atoning sacrifice. None other has had so profound an influence upon all who have lived and will yet live upon the earth.

He was the Great Jehovah of the Old Testament, the Messiah of the New. Under the direction of His Father, He was the creator of the earth. “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:3). Though sinless, He was baptized to fulfill all righteousness. He “went about doing good” (Acts 10:38), yet was despised for it. His gospel was a message of peace and goodwill. He entreated all to follow His example. He walked the roads of Palestine, healing the sick, causing the blind to see, and raising the dead. He taught the truths of eternity, the reality of our premortal existence, the purpose of our life on earth, and the potential for the sons and daughters of God in the life to come.

He instituted the sacrament as a reminder of His great atoning sacrifice. He was arrested and condemned on spurious charges, convicted to satisfy a mob, and sentenced to die on Calvary’s cross. He gave His life to atone for the sins of all mankind. His was a great vicarious gift in behalf of all who would ever live upon the earth.

We solemnly testify that His life, which is central to all human history, neither began in Bethlehem nor concluded on Calvary. He was the Firstborn of the Father, the Only Begotten Son in the flesh, the Redeemer of the world.

He rose from the grave to “become the firstfruits of them that slept” (1 Corinthians 15:20). As Risen Lord, He visited among those He had loved in life. He also ministered among His “other sheep” (John 10:16) in ancient America. In the modern world, He and His Father appeared to the boy Joseph Smith, ushering in the long-promised “dispensation of the fulness of times” (Ephesians 1:10).

Of the Living Christ, the Prophet Joseph wrote: “His eyes were as a flame of fire; the hair of his head was white like the pure snow; his countenance shone above the brightness of the sun; and his voice was as the sound of the rushing of great waters, even the voice of Jehovah, saying:

“I am the first and the last; I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain; I am your advocate with the Father” (D&C 110:3–4).

Of Him the Prophet also declared: “And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives!

“For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father—

“That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God” (D&C 76:22–24).

We declare in words of solemnity that His priesthood and His Church have been restored upon the earth—“built upon the foundation of … apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone” (Ephesians 2:20).

We testify that He will someday return to earth. “And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together” (Isaiah 40:5). He will rule as King of Kings and reign as Lord of Lords, and every knee shall bend and every tongue shall speak in worship before Him. Each of us will stand to be judged of Him according to our works and the desires of our hearts.

We bear testimony, as His duly ordained Apostles—that Jesus is the Living Christ, the immortal Son of God. He is the great King Immanuel, who stands today on the right hand of His Father. He is the light, the life, and the hope of the world. His way is the path that leads to happiness in this life and eternal life in the world to come. God be thanked for the matchless gift of His divine Son.
