You and I are spirit children of God our Eternal Father. We lived with them prior to our mortality. We are experiencing our mortality for a very short time further to learn good from evil, make sacred covenants, keep the Ten and Beatitude commandments, and love and serve others with Christ-like respect and love. 3. My subject is the spiritual gift of Virtue
4. Our 13th Article of Faith says We believe in being virtuous. (13th Articles of Faith and Philippians 4:57.) The commandment is Let Virtue Garnish Thy Thoughts Unceasingly.
5. The revealed word of the Lord found in the 121st section of the Doctrine and Covenants reads:
6. “Let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven.
7. “The Holy Ghost shall be thy constant companion, and thy scepter an unchanging scepter of righteousness and truth; and thy dominion shall be an everlasting dominion, and without compulsory means it shall flow unto thee forever and ever” (vv. 45–46).
8. Virtue is a pattern of thought and behavior based on the highest moral standards.
9. Virtue is required to receive a temple recommend and enter the Lord’s holy temples.
10. Virtue should likewise be required to enter and live in our homes.
11. Since are bodies are the temples of God, virtue is also a prerequisite in our daily walk and talk so we may entertain God The Holy Ghost in our thoughts and actions.
12. Virtue is a prerequisite to receiving the on-going presence and guidance of The Holy Ghost.
13. Virtue includes chastity and moral purity.
14. Virtue begins in the heart and in the mind.
15. It is taught and nurtured in the home by virtuous parents and siblings and grandparents and neighbors.
16. Virtue is the mental and spiritual and physical accumulation of thousands of righteous decisions, images and actions.
17. Unfortunately, virtue is a word we don’t hear often in today’s society.
18. The Latin root for the word virtue is virtus which means strength.
19. Virtue gives adults, young adults, teenagers, and children inner strength.
20. Virtue gives a person quiet dignity.
21. Virtue gives individuals confidence.
22. They are confident because they love Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son.
23. Again, because they are virtuous they are worthy to receive and be guided by the Holy Ghost.
24. A virtuous person stands for the right even if he or she has to stand alone.
25. President Thomas S. Monson said:
26. “You be the one to make a stand for right, even if you stand alone.
27. “Have the moral courage to be a light for others to follow.
28. “There is no friendship more valuable than your own clear conscience, your own moral cleanliness
29. —and what a glorious feeling it is to know that you stand in your appointed place clean and with the confidence that you are worthy to do so.”1
30. Virtue – is a holy gift of the Spirit obtained by prayer.
31. Virtue – is righteous thoughts.
32. Virtue – is righteous actions.
33. Virtue – is modesty opposed to immodesty.
34. Virtue – is fierce refusal and elimination of all media, print, and internet evil sex.
35. Virtue – is refusal to enjoy media or print or internet violence.
36. Virtue – is to keep the Sabbath day holy, avoiding football and golf and other sports and shopping on that holy day.
37. Virtue – is to pay an honest tithing and generous fast offering.
38. Virtue – is the conscious removal of lust from one’s thoughts.
39. Virtue – is a cardinal principle of godliness for God the Father and God the Son and God the Holy Ghost are perfectly virtuous.
40. Virtue – is ultimately over time to be sanctified as they are sanctified which means to be holy as they are holy.
41. Virtue – is charity, the pure love of Christ, manifest toward family, neighbors, and enemies.
42. Virtue – is humility not pride in one’s status or wealth.
43. Virtue – is love not hate.
44. Virtue – is forgiveness.
45. Virtue – is kindness not ill will.
46. Virtue – is clean language.
47. Virtue – is to refuse to take in vain the name of Heavenly Father, Jesus, the Holy Ghost, apostles, prophets, local leaders, any of the Lord’s anointed, and neighbors, friends, and even enemies.
48. Virtue – is focus on clean images shunning all pornography hard or soft, physical or image.
49. When I was a teenager, an older young man on leave from the military came to our house in Concord, California. He asked and my parents let me go to San Francisco with him. There he took me to Chinatown where he took me inside a strip club. I wish I had had the presence of mind to refuse. To this day, I carry that evil memory. I still do not trust that person.
50. Virtue – is entry into temple, church, and home places of holiness contrasted with refusal to enter into bars and dark gaming establishments or dark internet websites or other places of evil.
51. Virtue – is honoring not in any way tearing down others.
52. Virtue – is goodness versus evil.
53. Virtue – again, is godliness modeled by God our Heavenly Father and God the Son Jesus Christ and God the Holy Ghost.
54. Virtue – is holiness to the Lord as stated on temples.
55. Virtue – is all that is lovely, righteous and of good report
56. Virtue – is to garnish one’s thoughts with purity and holiness – decent literature, pure movies, pure internet, pure magazines, pure ideas, decent conversation.
57. Virtue – is to eschew evil jokes and demeaning humor.
58. Virtue – is peacemaking contrasted with contentiousness.
59. Virtue – is honoring others versus selfish envy of another’s status or family or possessions.
60. Virtue – is unselfishness.
61. Virtue – is keeping God’s ten commandments and beatitudes versus succumbing to the temptations of our adversary.
62. Virtue – is chastity.
63. Virtue – is sexual purity. (Moroni 9:9)
64. Virtue – is honesty.
65. Virtue – is integrity.
66. Virtue – is power.
67. Virtue – is moral excellence, power and strength. (Luke 8:46)
68. As we are to pray for other spiritual gifts, we are to pray diligently for the spiritual gift of virtue.

104. 2 Peter 1:5 and Doctrine & Covenants 4:6 command us “Add to your faith virtue.
105. The word of God is laden with virtue.
106. The holy scriptures are filled with virtue.
107. In dealing with children, in working with adults, we are advised to eschew force and try the virtue of the word of God. (Alma 31:5)

110. Elder David A. Bednar Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles gave a talk he titled Clean Hands and a Pure Heart

112. “Our spiritual purpose is to overcome both sin and the desire to sin, both the taint and the tyranny of sin. … [Our savior said:]
113. “Now this is the commandment: Repent, all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me and be baptized in my name, that ye may be sanctified by the reception of the Holy Ghost, that ye may stand spotless before me at the last day” (3 Nephi 27:20). …
114. “The gate of baptism leads to the strait and narrow path and to the destination of putting off the natural man and becoming a saint through the Atonement of Christ the Lord (see Mosiah 3:19).
115. “The purpose of our mortal journey is not merely to see the sights on earth or to expend our allotment of time on self-centered pursuits; rather, we are to “walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4), to become sanctified by yielding our hearts unto God (see Helaman 3:35), and to obtain “the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16).

128. Prophets throughout the ages have emphasized the dual requirements of (1) avoiding and overcoming bad and (2) doing good and becoming better. Consider the penetrating questions posed by the Psalmist:

130. “He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully” (Psalm 24:3–4).
131. “Brothers and sisters, it is possible for us to have clean hands but not have a pure heart.
132. “Please notice that both clean hands and a pure heart are required to ascend into the hill of the Lord and to stand in His holy place.
133. “Let me suggest that hands are made clean through the process of putting off the natural man and by overcoming sin and the evil influences in our lives through the Savior’s Atonement.
134. “Hearts are purified as we receive His strengthening power to do good and become better.
135. “All of our worthy desires and good works, as necessary as they are, can never produce clean hands and a pure heart.
136. “It is the Atonement of Jesus Christ that provides both a cleansing and redeeming power that helps us to overcome sin and a sanctifying and strengthening power that helps us to become better than we ever could by relying only upon our own strength.
137. “The infinite Atonement is for both the sinner and for the saint in each of us. …
138. “Moroni’s Concluding Invitation
139. “The requirement to put off the natural man and become a saint, to avoid and overcome bad and to do and become good, to have clean hands and a pure heart, is a recurring theme throughout the Book of Mormon. In fact, Moroni’s concluding invitation at the end of the book is a summary of this theme.
140. “Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ. …
141. “And again, if ye by the grace of God are perfect in Christ, and deny not his power, then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy, without spot” (Moroni 10:32–33; emphasis added).
